Owls use balanced attack to dismantle outmanned Rockets

PHILADELPHIA -- The #22/22 Temple Owls used a balanced scoring attack that featured all five starters reaching double-figures in an 82-49 win over Toledo at the Liacouras center Sunday afternoon. Temple improves to 2-0 on the season and now has 11 days off before travelling to Old Spice Classic for a Thanksgiving showdown against California on ESPN2 (9:00 p.m.). Toledo, which had just six scholarship players available for first-year coach Tod Kowalczyk, falls to 0-2.
Junior forward Micheal Eric led the Owls with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Eric, who rejected a career-high five shots in the opener, added two more blocks to lead the TU defense, Junior Ramone Moore and senior Lavoy Allen each added 12 points with Allen dishing a game-high six assists. Junior forward Scootie Randall topped double figures for just the second time in his career with 11 points and junior guard Juan Fernandez chipped in with 10 points and five assists.
In all, Temple dished 26 assists on 36 baskets while turning the ball over just six times. The Owls defense made 12 steals and held the Rockets to 38.6 percent from the field. Temple also shot 54.5 percent of its shots from the field.
The 33-point margin was the largest in a Temple win since a 109-70 victory over St. Bonaventure on Feb. 7, 2007.
The Owls trailed 4-2 after the first minute and change before going on a 17-2 run to take a commanding 19-6 lead with just over 13 minutes to play in the half. The margin hovered around there until a 13-0 run capped by a Moore lay-up made it 38-13 with 2:20 on the clock.
Temple did not let up in the second half, pushing the margin to 37 (75-38) following a three-point play by freshman Aaron Brown. The St. Benedict's Prep product scored five points over five minutes in his first action of the season.
Ten of the 11 Owls that saw action scored including junior walk-on Jake Godino, who tallied his first career points with a three-pointer that made it 78-45.
