Game to be televised live on ESPN2 at 9:00 p.m.
Game Notes
ORLANDO - The #21/20 Temple Owls return to the court after an 11-day layoff for a Thanksgiving night showdown against the California Bears in the first round of the Old Spice Classic held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The game, which tips off at 9:00 p.m., will be televised live on ESPN2 as well as ESPN 3D, and can be heard on 1210 AM WPHT.
Both teams are off to 2-0 starts with the Owls dispatching Seton Hall (62-56) and Toledo (82-49) at the Liacouras Center on November 12 and 14th, respectively. Junior guard Ramone Moore (13.0 ppg.) leads a balanced Temple offense that features four double-figure scorers and six players averaging 7.5 points or better. Fellow juniors Juan Fernandez and Micheal Eric average 11.0 points while senior forward Lavoy Allen, a preseason All-America by the Basketball Times, is at 10.5 ppg.
Defense was the question mark for head coach Fran Dunphy's squad entering the season, but the Owls have answered that with an Atlantic 10 leading 52.5 scoring defense and a 33.3 field goal percentage defense, also tops in the conference.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Mike Montgomery, the Cal Bears opened with impressive home wins over Cal-State Northridge (80-63, Nov, 16) and New Mexico (89-64, Nov. 20). Juniors Jorge Gutierrez and Harper Kamp provide a strong inside-outside combination to pace the Bears. Gutierrez leads the squad in scoring (19.0 ppg.), assists (11) and steals (5) while Kamp is second in scoring (18.5 ppg.) and rebounding (6.5 rpg.). Gary Franklin, one of two freshman starters along with Allen Crabbe (6.0 ppg.), is the other double-figure scorer on the team with an 11.5 scoring average.
This is the first meeting between the teams since Temple downed Cal, 51-42, in the championship game of the 1973 Quaker City Classic held at The Palestra. The Owls have won the last three meetings, all for championships of in-season tournaments with Cal winning the other contest, a 49-43 decision at home on Dec, 23, 1935.
