Owls battle Bulldogs on ESPNU & ESPN 3D

The #21/20 Temple Owls will take on Georgia in the consolation bracket of the Old Spice Classic Friday evening (7:30 p.m./ESPNU?&?ESPN 3D/1210 AM?WPHT). Temple dropped a tough 57-50 decision to California in the opening round Thursday evening while Georgia lost a double-overtime thriller, 89-83, to Notre Dame in its opening round game.

The Owls led by as many as seven, 45-38, in their opener, but the Golden Bears used a 16-1 run over a six-minute span to pull out the victory. Lavoy Allen, who leads a balanced scoring attack with an 11.3 average for head coach Fran Dunphy's squad, topped the Cherry and White with 13 points. Rahlir Jefferson (9.0 ppg.), who leads the Owls with a 6.3 rebound average, added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds in the contest.

Juan Fernandez (10.3 ppg.) and Ramone Moore (10.3 ppg.) also average double figure for Temple.

Georgia, under the direction of head coach Mark Fox, is led by junior guard Travis Lee (19.3 ppg.). One of four double-figure scorers for the Bulldogs, Lee tallied 23 points, nine rebounds and five steals against the Irish. The Bulldogs got a lift from preseason SEC?Player of the Year, 6-10 junior forward Trey Tompkins, who scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his first action of the season. He had been sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Junior guard Gerald Robinson (16.5 ppg.)?also scored in double figures, tallying 16 in the loss.

Temple and Georgia have only met once on the hardwood, that coming on March 11, 1982, a 73-60 Bulldog win in Athens in the first round of the NIT.
