Owls to open McGuirk Arena to sellout crowd
MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - The Temple Owls will look to rebound from a tough Thanksgiving trip to the Old Spice Classic when they take on the Central Michigan Chippewas this Wednesday evening (7:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT). The Owls (3-2) will help the Chippewas open their brand new McGuirk Arena with a soldout crowd of 5,300 on hand for the first ever game in the new building.
Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, dropped two of its three games in the Orlando, Fla, tournament to fall out of the rankings for the first time since December 2009. The Owls struggled on the offensive end, averaging a mere 50.5 ppg. in losses to California (57-50) and Texas A&M (54-51).
Defensively, however, TU is off to a record start. The Owls have held their opponents under 60 points in each of their five games, only matched by the 1962-63 Temple team that accomplished the feat in the first six games for a modern day school record streak. The Owls are also holding opponents to 35.6 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent from three-point range.
Junior Ramone Moore leads a balanced offensive attack with a 10.8 scoring average. Six other players score between 6.6 and 9.6 points per game. The team's rebounding is also by committee with sophomore Rahlir Jefferson (5.8 rpg.), senior Lavoy Allen (5.6 rpg.) and junior Micheal Eric (5.6 rpg.) all above five rebounds per contest.
Fifth-year head coach Ernie Ziegler's Chippewas are led this season by his son Trey. The freshman guard has made an immediate impact on the two-time defending Mid-American Conference West Division champions, leading the squad in scoring (18.8 ppg.) and three-point shooting (8-16, .500). Senior swingman Jalin Thomas also scores in double figures (14.0 ppg.) for the Chippewas.
Central Michigan has played its first five contests away from home, defeating Illinois-Chicago, 62-52, on November 24 in its last game.
This is the first meeting between the schools.
