Owls-Terps clash is final game of tripleheader at the Verizon Center
Game Notes
WASHINGTON, DC - The Temple Owls take on the Maryland Terrapins in the final of three games Sunday (8:00 p.m./CSN/1210 AM WPHT) in the BB&T Classic held at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. American University plays Florida in the first game of the tripleheader (2:45 p.m.) with George Washington battling Navy in the second game (5:15 p.m.).
Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, is coming off its first true road game of the season, a 65-53 win over Central Michigan Wednesday in the first game ever at McGuirk Arena. The Owls broke out of a shooting slump, hitting 62.5 percent from the field in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit.
Junior guard Juan Fernandez (11.0 ppg.) regained his touch from long range, draining all three of his treys over the final 20 minutes to finish with a season-high 18 points. Senior forward Lavoy Allen (10.2 ppg.), who averaged a double-double last season, posted his first of this season, contributing 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Ramone Moore, who leads the Owls with an 11.7 scoring average, added 16 points in the win, including six in the decisive 17-4 run to close out the contest.
Maryland, under the direction of head coach Gary Williams, has won three straight games to improve to 6-2 on the season. The Terps are led by sophomore forward Jordan Williams. A Wooden Award candidate, Williams is averaging team highs of 17.1 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Senior swingman Cliff Tucker (12.1 ppg.) also averages double figures while topping the team in three-pointers (9).
This is the first meeting between the schools in the series which is tied at four victories each since a 91-85 Temple win at the Liacouras Center on January 28, 2006. Dunphy, who served two years as an assistant coach under Williams ('80-82) at American University, has lost twice to his former mentor, both coming while serving as the head coach at Penn.
