Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - The #20/21 Temple men's basketball team's most played rivalry reaches its 150th game Saturday when the Owls take The Palestra floor Saturday afternoon (Noon/Comcast SportsNet) to take on the Saint Joseph's Hawks in an Atlantic 10 Conference battle that also counts in the Philadelphia Big 5 standings.
The Owls (21-5, 9-2 A-10) have won two straight and are looking to keep pace and are currently tied with Xavier (19-6, 9-2) for second, one-half game behind conference leader #25/NR Richmond (21-6/10-2). Senior guard Ryan Brooks (15.0 ppg.) continues to pace the Owls attack while sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (12.0 ppg.) and junior forward Lavoy Allen (11.2 ppg.) also top double figures in scoring. Fernandez tops the league in three-point percentage (.447, 51-114) while Allen ranks third in the A-10 in rebounding (10.3 rpg.).
Sophomore Ramone Moore (7.1 rpg.), who has started the last three games in place of Fernandez, has led the Owls in scoring in four of the last five games and is averaging 15.2 points during that stretch.
Senior guards Darrin Govens (12.8 ppg.) and Garrett Williamson (11.8 ppg.) lead Saint Joseph's (9-17, 3-9).
Junior forward Idris Hilliard (10.5 ppg.) also tops double figures for Phil Martelli's Saint Joseph's squad which has lost three in a row and six of their last seven.
The Owls defeated the Hawks, 73-46, on Jan. 6 for its sixth straight win in the series. Temple owns an 84-65 all-time record against Saint Joseph's.
Temple coach Fran Dunphy and the city's Coaches vs. Cancer group are asking fans to bring household items to the game to be donated to the AstraZenca Hope Lodge. The AstraZenca Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society is a free service provided to cancer patients and their families who must travel to receive treatment. It is always in need of items for the families' use.
Among the items needed are: paper towels; laundry detergent; dryer sheets; waterless hand santizer; dishwasher detergent; trash bags; batteries; paper plates; toothpaste and deodorant (small tubes only); energy saver lightbulbs. They also request white bath, hand or wash towels and white full-size sheets.
