Head Coach Amanda Janney’s recruiting class made up entirely of PA natives
PHILADELPHIA – Temple field hockey coach Amanda Janney has announced the signing of eight student-athletes for the 2010 season. Madi Blyler (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Tori Cox (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), Emily Fuertsch (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Lindsay Garner (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), Maura McGlone (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Lizzy Millen (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), Mia Reed (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Mandi Shearer (Bainbridge, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) have all committed to play for the Owls.
“We are very excited about these new student-athletes joining our TUFH family,” said Janney. “This is our best recruiting class in five years and I am glad that we have been able to bring in some of the top hockey players in the country.
“All of these players have been highly recommended by their high school and club team coaches, and they have all excelled on their respective teams. Two of them (Blyler and Millen) have made the USFHA National Futures Championships in multiple years, where they have competed with the best in the country.
“These seniors have chosen Temple because of the university's great academics and because they know they are joining a strong hockey program. I'm confident they will succeed at Temple both in the classroom and on the field as they help our team continue to improve and win Championships.”
Blyler was a first team all-state honoree as a senior, helping lead Emmaus High School to both district and league titles by scoring 19 goals and tallying six assists. She was a second team all-state selection as a junior, and during her sophomore year the team won the PIAA State Championship. Blyler's brother, Logan, is currently a junior at Temple.
Cox was a two-time team MVP for Susquehanna Township in Harrisburg. The team made it to the playoffs for the first time ever during her senior year, in which she led the team in assists.
Fuertsch helped lead her team at Owen J. Roberts High School to a league title in 2009 and the first round of the state tournament. She was an all-area and all-conference first team selection, and scored seven goals and six assists as a defender, earning Team Defensive MVP honors.
Garner led her Conestoga Valley High School in points and assists as a senior, earning MVP honors as well as league all-star recognition. Garner was also a two-time participant in the National Hockey Festival at the club level.
McGlone earned honorable mention all-state honors as a senior at Southern Lehigh High School. Over her junior and senior seasons, the team amassed a record of 46-3 and made it to the state playoffs both years. McGlone's sister, Meghan, plays field hockey at Juniata College.
Millen, a goalkeeper, was a first team all-state selection as a senior for Whitehall High School, and was a three-time all-conference honoree. Her uncle, Andy Tomasic, was a Hall of Famer at Temple for football and baseball, and went pro in both.
Reed earned first team all-league honors as a senior team co-captain for Pennsbury High School. She was the team's leading scorer with 15 goals (second in the league), helping take the squad to a league title.
Shearer was an honorable mention all-state selection as a senior team captain at Elizabethtown Area High School. She was a four-year varsity starter, and a two-time second team league all-star. Shearer was a multi-sport athlete, earning four letters in softball and one apiece in basketball and track.
Temple is coming off a strong campaign in 2009 that saw the Owls advance to the championship of the Atlantic 10 Tournament before falling to Richmond. Temple finished with a 9-12 overall record, and a 4-2 mark in A-10 play.
