PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Ramone Moore led all scorers with 15 points and junior Lavoy Allen recorded his eighth double-double of the season as the #17/19 Temple men's basketball team rolled past Duquesne 76-60, Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center.
Three TU players scored in double figures, as the Owls move to 19-4, 7-1 in A-10 play, now owning a 9-1 mark at home this season. Allen's double-double is the third in his last three games. The Dukes fall to 11-11, 2-6 in A-10 games.
Duquesne came out of the gates hot, opening with a 10-2 run supplemented by two Owls' turnovers. Sophomore Eric Evans (12 pts) drained a three to start the scoring at 19:30, followed by junior Bill Clark feeding a nice backdoor pass to sophomore Melquan Bolding (6 pts) for two.
After an Evans miss, Temple got on the board with a basket down low from sophomore Michael Eric.
Clark (12 pts, 5 rbs) hit from long range to extend the early lead to 8-2, and, after another TU turnover, hit a tough fade away from the right side of the basket
Senior guard Luis Guzman (9 pts, 6 rbs, 4 asts) attempted to spark the Owls, scoring four unanswered points on two free throws and a fast break lay up at 16:19.
The Dukes were quick to respond, utilizing a full court press to induce a steal by junior Damian Saunders (9 pts, 6 rbs, 6 asts). Saunders then found a cutting Evans for a lay-up, being fouled in the process and converting the three-point play.
Allen (15 pts, 14 rbs) returned momentum to the home team's favor, slamming home a dunk at 15:24, and putting in another two at 13:43 to cut the deficit to three, 13-10.
Bench play was critical for the Owls, with five reserves combining for 25 first half points.
“I think we all fly by the seat of our pants, and just start throwing guys in there,” commented head coach Fran Dunphy. “Obviously, guys came off of the bench and played tremendously well out there for us.”
Entering the game at 11:00, junior Craig Williams drained a timely three to tie the game for the first time at 21-21.
Temple went up on two free throws from redshirt-freshman T.J. DiLeo, but Duquesne quickly evened the tally on a two from sophomore Morakinyo Williams.
The Owls then exploded on a 13-2 run, sparked by a three from sophomore Scootie Randall to give Temple a 26-23 lead, one they would not relinquish.
DiLeo (7 pts, 3 rbs) bested a career high in the first half with seven points. The New Jersey native (Cinnaminson) nailed a clutch three in front of the Duquesne bench at 6:39, then swiped a pass at the point and elevated for his first career dunk on the fast break to put the Owls up 31-23.
Temple would maintain the lead for the rest of the period, extending the margin to as high as ten at 2:49 on a smooth lay up from Moore.
Momentum would favor the Dukes heading into the break, as Clark drained a three at the buzzer to close the gap at 42-34. Temple's total equaled a season high for points in a half, and marked the third time the team has topped 40 points in a half this season.
Only playing three minutes in the first half, sophomore guard Juan Fernandez started second stanza scoring with a strong lay up at 18:57.
Saunders provided the offense for the Dukes, accounting for their first seven points of the half. Completing an old-fashioned three point play, Saunders made one more from the line and hit a two to cut the Owls lead to six.
Another TU sub would play an impact role, as freshman forward Rahlir Jefferson entered and drew contact on a lay-up, converting the ensuing foul shot at 16:52. The local product (Chester, Pa./Chester) fueled a 16-4 Temple run, highlighted by six points from Allen and capped by a three from senior Ryan Brooks to extend the Owls largest lead yet to 60-42.
The Owls would hold Duquesne scoreless for nearly three-minutes (8:38-5:52), chipping in 11 unanswered points during the span. Moore started the run with a short jumper for two. A steal from Jefferson set up Fernandez from long range, followed by six consecutive Temple free throws – two from Moore and four from Jefferson. The run extended Owls lead to 27 points, their largest of the night.
It was a career night for Jefferson with 11 points, as Temple matched their second-best season high with 76 points.
The Owls shot 57-percent from the field on the evening, their second best margin of the season. DiLeo also recorded a career high in minutes with 20.
Up next for the Owls is a trip to Richmond on February 6, with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU, and will also be broadcast on 1210 AM WPHT.
