Owls held to just one run, one hit

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – One run and one hit in the first inning would be all the Temple baseball team would be allowed Tuesday afternoon at Monmouth, as the Owls lost 3-1. Junior Byron McKoy went one-for-three, scoring TU's lone run.
Sophomore Tyler Horst (1-1) took the loss for TU, lasting five innings and striking out four. Horst allowed just three runs on seven hits. Monmouth's Dan Smith (1-0) went the distance in his first career start, throwing nine innings and striking out five.
Temple jumped out to an early lead, with junior Byron McKoy leading off the game with a single up the middle. McKoy stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by senior Tony Jusino. He would plate on the next batter, as junior Adrian Perez grounded out to short.
The Hawks answered in the bottom of the frame. A double by two-hitter Josh Boyd set up an RBI-single for Jamie Rosenkranz, tying the game at 1-1.
Monmouth would put up two more runs - one in the fifth and one in the sixth - to take their final lead at 3-1.
The Owls fall to 2-14, while Monmouth moves to 4-6.
Up next for Temple is their first Atlantic 10 series, hosting Rhode Island on March 26-28 at Skip Wilson Field.
