Owls take on Rams March 26-28 at Skip Wilson Field
PHILADELPHIA – This Friday marks the beginning of another season of conference play for the Temple men's baseball team, as they take on Atlantic 10-foe Rhode Island March 26-28 at Skip Wilson Field. Action Friday begins at 3:00 p.m., with the weekend games each starting at 1:00 p.m. Live stats will be available all weekend, with games being streamed live on Friday and Sunday.
The Owls (2-14) look to get out to a similar start as they did a year ago, winning their first nine conference contests. Temple's pre-conference slate has been challenging, but has prepared them for just as rigorous of an A-10 schedule. Traveling to compete at nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast, as well as UNLV and Duke, the Owls have since returned home to pick up wins against Delaware State and Niagara.
Head coach Rob Valli's lineup has shown its potential as the season has progressed. Led by the consistently hot bat of senior Tony Jusino, the Owls as a team have compiled 152 hits including 31 doubles. Jusino (28-69, .406), junior Jean Carlos Diaz (.353, 18-51) and classmate Adrian Perez (.351, 13-37) each boast averages above .300.
Jusino leads the Cherry and White in batting average and hits, recently seeing his 12-game hit streak come to an end against Monmouth on March 23. The San Diego, Calif. native has hit safely in 13 of Temple's first 16 games, owning a team-best tying five doubles.
Junior Byron McKoy has provided the run production for TU, ranking first on the team with four homeruns and 14 RBI. Junior Rafael Cordero has driven in his fair share of runs, tallying 10 RBI with five doubles.
Temple will be looking to get a little more from their pitching this weekend. Redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini gets the nod Friday, with junior Ben White throwing Saturday and redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak taking the hill Sunday.
Rhode Island (7-11) enters the weekend after splitting a midweek matchup with William & Mary. Offensively, Tom Coulombe leads the Rams with a .444 batting average (28-63), six doubles and 19 RBI.
Games are scheduled for Friday, March 26 (3:00 p.m.), Saturday, March 27 (1:00 p.m.), and Sunday, March 28 (1:00 p.m.) at Skip Wilson Field.
