PHILADELPHIA - The #16/20 Temple men's basketball team would like nothing more than to honor the senior members of the 2009-10 Owls with the program's first regular season Atlantic 10 Conference championship since 2002. The Cherry and White will accomplish that with a win over visiting George Washington Saturday afternoon (2:00 p.m./OwlAccess) in the final regular season game for both teams.
The Owls (25-5/13-2 A-10), under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, have won six straight games and are tied in the conference standings with Xavier (22-7/13-2). Temple owns the tie-breaker with the Musketeers and, with a win over GW, will be the #1-seed in the A-10 Conference Tournament that opens Tuesday at campus sites before heading to Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall for quarterfinal action on Friday.
Ryan Brooks, one of three seniors playing in their last home game, leads the Owls with a 14.5 scoring average. He is joined by starting backcourt mate Luis Guzman, who has eclipsed career highs in scoring (4.9 ppg.), rebounding (4.3 rpg.) and assists (3.2 apg.) while starting every game. Reserve Rafael DeLeon is the other Owl to don the Cherry and White for the final time at home.
Junior forward Lavoy Allen (11.7 ppg., 11.0 rpg.), the reigning Big 5 Player of the Week, enters the game needing just 11 points to become the 46th TU player to reach the 1000-point plateau. Sophomore Juan Fernandez (12.4 ppg.) continues to lead the A-10 in three-point percentage (62-137, .453).
George Washington (16-12/6-9) under the direction of head coach Karl Hobbs, enters play tied for ninth in the conference standings with Duquesne, one-game behind St. Bonaventure.
Senior forward Damian Hollis leads the Colonials with a 13.3 scoring average. Freshman Lasan Kromah, who ranks second in the A-10 in steals per game (2.0 spg.), also averages double figures (11.8 ppg.)
Temple will also honor three senior student managers Marley Abram, Trevor Fick and Shannon Hodge in pregame cermonies. At halftime over 30 former Owls, back for a reunion, will be introduced.
