Team meets Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter

PHILADELPHIA - On April 14, the Temple field hockey team participated in "Temple University Bowl for Kids' Sake" to support Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Owls met Mayor Michael Nutter at the event, and head coach Amanda Janney says the team will be further involving themselves in the organization as "Bigs" next season.

Temple's men's basketball team was also in attendance, and Coach Fran Dunphy was able to share their experiences as Big Brothers.

"We were invited to attend by L. Harrison Jay, who is Temple's Community Relations Director," said Janney. "He works with the Temple Big Brothers Big Sisters group and they are trying to promote the group, recruit new "Bigs" and spread the word. We met the Mayor and he thanked the team for their help and support of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"I agree with Mayor Nutter that this Big Brothers Big Sisters organization is an important group that can positively impact our community. I am excited about the possibilities of our team working as "Big Sisters" and helping some of the students in the local schools. I believe in having the team give back to the community around Temple, and I think having the opportunity to work with kids in need on a 1 on 1 basis will be a life-changing experience for both the kids and our student-athletes."

Janney noted that the team has a number of players who are education majors, and the experience in Big Brothers Big Sisters can only help further prepare them for their teaching careers. "This also gives the opportunity to our non-education majors to get involved with the local schools," said Janney, "and help some of the students who need the positive mentors that our players can be."
