Perez clutch again with game winning single in the ninth

Game 1 | Game 2

AMBLER, Pa.
– Another clutch walk off single from junior Adrian Perez sealed the series win for the Temple baseball team over Richmond, winning game two 11-10 after falling in the first contest 12-7 at Skip Wilson Field on Saturday. The Owls won their first series of the season, improving to 7-28, 4-9 in Atlantic 10 play while the Spiders fall to 18-19, 5-10.

Temple jumped out to an early lead in the first game, posting three runs in the second on a walk to sophomore Jabair Khan and a two-run single by junior Byron McKoy (4-5, 2 RBI). The Owls' picked up two more runs in the third on a two-run triple by freshman Dan Dragos (2-4, 2 RBI, 3B).

Three consecutive scoring innings by Richmond put Temple behind 12-6 and chased starter redshirt-senior Matt Mongiardini (4.2 IP, 7 ER, 3 K). The Owls managed one run in the fifth, with redshirt-sophomore Steve Nikorak (2-4, RBI, 3B) tripling and scoring on a single by sophomore Taylor Juran (2-5, RBI).

Temple put one more up in the ninth as junior Ryan Ferguson tripled and scored, putting the final tally at 12-7.

In game two, the Owls again struck the scoreboard first, posting one run on back-to-back doubles by Perez (3-4, 2 RBI, 2B) and Ferguson (3-5, 2 RBI, 2B).

Richmond came back with one run in the second and third, but the Cherry and White again answered to tie the game in the bottom of the third.

Three runs in the third improved the Spiders lead, tacking on another in the sixth to extend their margin to 6-2.

Temple added three in bottom of the sixth on a three run home run from Dragos (4-5, 3 RBI, HR), cutting the deficit to one run.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Spiders posted three more runs to put the Owls down 9-5. Four runs on four hits and one error tied the game back up for Temple, but a costly TU error in the top of the ninth gave Richmond what looked like the victory.

Dragos started things off in the Temple ninth with a single to left, being pinch run for by freshman David Hall who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Henry Knabe singled to move his classmate to third, and a triple from Khan plated the game tying run. An intentional walk to senior Tony Jusino brought up Perez, who pushed a line drive to right to win the game.

For Perez, it was his second game winning hit in as many days and third of the season.

Nikorak started game two, going five and giving up five earned runs. Senior Matt Blackburn earned the win, throwing the final 2.2 innings giving up no earned runs.

Temple (7-28, 4-11) is back at Skip Wilson Field this Tuesday when they take on city rival Villanova at 3:00 p.m.
