CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Temple field hockey senior Sarah Dalrymple is currently staying at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., with the U.S. National Team. Dalrymple is sending updates to owlsports.com as she experiences the life of an elite athlete.

Greetings from Cali!

I've been here for about a week and a half now and things are continuing to go well. The team finished up a 4 game series playing in the Junior Men's National Championship Tournament on Sunday. We tied the first game and won the remaining three. After finishing up this series we had 2 full days off. On our first day off we headed to Pacific Beach for the afternoon. I was actually pretty excited to be able to make it to the beach because I'm missing my family's annual beach trip in order to train here in California. Unfortunately, it was a bit too cold to spend the day on the beach so my roommates and I just walked along the beach and explored the different shops.

On our second day off Katie Evans decided it would be good idea to go to a beginner hip-hop class. Boy was she wrong! I went with my roommates Katie and Kelly. We tried to convince Amy to come with us, but she was adamant that she would not be attending. This was my very first dance class ever, and we didn't want to embarrass ourselves so we stood in the back row. Class started, and I remember thinking to myself that, from my spot in the back row, I was doing great. However, things changed rather quickly when our instructor told the group to turn around; what was previously the back of the class was now the front. There I stood, front and center, leading a hip-hop routine that I didn't know. It was at that moment that I realized that I didn't know a single part of the routine and that the dance was much easier to complete when you could watch the people in front of you. I literally just stood there not doing a single step to the dance. I'm sure my face was bright red with embarrassment. And to top it off, none of us can remember the song we danced to so now we can't even practice the routine!! Needless to say I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon for a 2nd class.

From here on out, our practice schedule is pretty challenging. Each day we have either one or two practices as well as an additional run or lift. I'm still working on adjusting to the level of play. It's a different style than in college, which makes it difficult, but I'm learning a lot at the same time. For every practice I am choosing a different fundamental skill to focus on. Recently I have found myself focusing on my footwork. With the speed of the game I find that it is most important to focus on using my footwork to make sure that I am on the correct angle when a shot is being taken. If not, my chances of saving the ball become pretty slim! Today the team had to sign waivers to complete a workout next week with the Navy SEALs. I'm told that it is going to be some sort of obstacle course, so I'll be sure to update you on how that goes in my next blog! That's all I have for now, be sure to check back next week for another update!
