PHILADELPHIA - An offensive explosion from sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt propelled Temple to its first Big 5 win of the season, as the Owls topped rival Penn 73-56 at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday night.  Wyatt came off the bench and set a career-best with a game-high 27 points, becoming the seventh different player this season to lead the Cherry and White in scoring.

Temple's dominance on its home court continued with its 16th consecutive win in the Liacouras Center, now owning a 13-4 overall, 1-1 Big 5 record.  The game was also meaningful in that it marked head coach Fran Dunphy's second-straight win over former Penn standout and current head coach Jerome Allen, whose Quakers fall to 5-8 overall, 0-3 the Big 5.

Wyatt's 27-point performance (9-13, 4-6 3-ptr) is the second-best individual effort of the season for the Owls, and marks the sixth time a Temple player has eclipsed the 20-point mark.  He was followed by double-figure scoring from junior guard Ramone Moore, who chipped in 12 points and tied a career-high with six assists.

Senior forward Lavoy Allen (10 pts) was a presence in the paint all night, posting a career-high six blocks.  He and fellow big man junior center Micheal Eric (8 pts, 2 blk) recorded a game-high six rebounds.

As a unit, the Owls shot 51.9 percent (27-52) from the floor, proving especially deadly in the second half by shooting 56.5 percent (13-23).  Temple connected for a season-best percentage from the foul line, shooting 92.9 percent (13-14).

After a quick layup by Penn's Jack Eggleston off of a lengthy opening tip, the Owls' defense stepped up with consecutive blocks from Allen and Eric.  Temple took their first lead of the game on a three in the corner by Fernandez, but four empty possesions from both sides separated the game's next basket - a jumper from Eric at 16:16.

An old-fashioned three point play from Conor Turley and a breakaway layup by Tyler Bernardini gave Penn the lead back at 7-5, but another mid-range jumper from Eric tied the score at 7-7 with 15:05 to play.  Randall got in the action on the next possession with a three from the same spot Fernandez connected from to give the Owls a 10-7 lead.

Back-to-back treys by Eggelston started Penn on a 9-2 run to go up 16-12, with a two by recently inserted Wyatt being met by a three from Bernardini at the end of the stretch.  Allen came up with a jump hook at 9:53 to bring the game back within one bucket at 14-16.

DiLeo provided a spark off of the bench and sparked a 8-0 run with a layup at 7:17.  A tip in off his own miss from Eric and a pair of free throws and a strong layup from Wyatt gave the Owls their largest lead thus far at 22-16 with 4:58 to play.

Penn chipped away at the deficit with freshman guard Miles Cartwright getting fouled behind the arc and going three-for-three from the line.  Wyatt erased the points with a three of his own, but Penn's Zack Rosen came up with a three at the other end to bring the Quakers closer at 22-25.

Wyatt continued to have the hot hand for Temple, sinking a trey to send the Owls into the locker room on an 11-4 run.  Eric picked up where Wyatt left off, grabbing an offensive rebound and making the put back.  A nice finish on a fast break from Randall was followed by a free throw from Bernardini, but a fade away from Fernandez and a pair of free throws from Moore gave Temple its largest lead of the half at 36-23 with :32 left.

Bernardini sunk a three in the waning seconds of the first half to put the score at the break, 36-26, in favor of the Owls.  Temple went to the bench early and often, with four reserves seeing action in the first half.  Wyatt led the reserves, and all scorers, with 12 points in the period.

Allen opened the second half scoring with a jumper, and a drive by Wyatt extended the Owls' lead to 14-points with 16:37 to play.  Penn would prove relentless, cutting the Temple lead under double-digits at 48-40 at 12:14 with a pair of threes to match twos from the Owls.

The Quakers inched closer after Cartwright went one-for-two at the line and sunk a two, but Wyatt's third three of the evening at 8:58 pushed the margin back to eight at 51-43.

A 12-3 run for the Owls featured a layup from Moore and four points from Fernandez, but was capped off by a two and another three from Wyatt to help him eclipse the 20-point mark and give Temple a 62-49 lead.

Temple would lead for the remainder of the contest, not allowing the Quakers to get closer than 13 points and pushing its largest lead of the game to 18 at 2:54.

Up next, the Owls travel to Xavier on January 22 at 3:00 p.m., with the game being televised nationally on ESPN2 and broadcast on 1210 AM WPHT.
