Gemski ('72) honored for her high school coaching success

BALTIMORE, Md. - Former Temple field hockey standout Elvetta (Discher) Gemski ('72) was recently inducted into the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Gemski was honored for her coaching success at Crestwood High School (Mountaintop, Pa.) where she has coached since 1973.

Gemski was a four-year field hockey student-athlete at Temple from 1968-71 for coach Eleanore Pepper. She also played three seasons of lacrosse, and graduted from the university in 1972. Her husband, Stan Gemski, was a football player at Temple.

Gemski is the only head coach the Crestwood field hockey program has ever known. She started a club field hockey program at Crestwood in 1973 and has not looked back. After two season of exhibition play, the Comets joined the Wyoming Valley Conference in 1976.

Over the next 34 seasons, Gemski's squads amassed a 555-111-23 overall record.

Gemski coached two standout student-athletes at Crestwood who went on to play at Temple- Sue Bing (1988-90) and Marcie Turney (1988-91).

During Gemski's tenure at Crestwood, the Comets captured four PIAA Class AA state titles (1988, 1999, 2003 and 2004). Her teams have participated in the state playoffs 23 times and captured 18 District 2 championships.

Gemski produced three U.S. National Team Members, 10 Junior National Team Members, with 118 of her players moving on to play college field hockey.

Gemski has been recognized for her outstanding accomplishments by many organizations. She was inducted into the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and was recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. She was named the Dita/NHFCA High School National Coach of the Year in 2004.
