PHILADELPHIA — After knocking down the game-tying free throw in regulation, senior Ramone Moore dropped a daggering three-pointer with 1:18 remaining in overtime to put Temple (1-0) in front of its Big 5 rival the Penn Quakers (1-1) for good, en route to a 73-67 victory in its 2011-12 season-opener on Monday night at The Palestra.

In the earliest city series game ever to be played, fellow senior Juan Fernandez posted a team-high 19 points for the Owls on 7-of-14 shooting, including a team-high three three-pointers, while fifth-year forward Micheal Eric finished just short of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points. Junior T.J. DiLeo had a career-high 10 point night in a career-most 38 minutes off the bench, while forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson impacted the Owls in a big way, as he also reached double figures with 10 points and tied his career-high in steals with three.

Overtime continued to be a back-and-forth battle until the final minute when Moore drilled a three-pointer after the Owls were trailing 64-63.  A strong defensive stand on the ensuing possession, sent Temple back the other way where Fernandez helped the Owls pull away with 17 ticks remaining when he silenced the Penn crowd with a three-pointer that put Temple ahead by five.

The Quakers still pushed to trim the lead, as they narrowed it back to two points with seven seconds left. However, a whistle was blown on Penn during Temple's inbounds pass for an intentional and a technical foul, sending the Owls down the other end of the floor for a total of four free throws, plus possession. Fernandez knocked down both of his attempts before Penn fouled once more sending DiLeo to the line, who put a cap on the game when he hit both of his free throws.

After getting off to a slow start, Temple progressively shot better from the field as the game went on. The Owls went 12-of-33 in the first half, before closing out 17-of-33 for the remainder of the contest, including a 5-of-6 performance in the extra five minutes.

Penn jumped on the Owls right away, taking a nine-point lead before the 12-minute mark. The Owls worked to claw their way back in the game, as they went on a 14-0 run to ultimately wipe away the deficit and jump out to their largest lead at 24-18.

The Quakers remained pesky, finding a way to even the score at 28 before the teams went into their half time locker rooms.

Moore put the Owls back in control for the majority of the second half with his layup that gave Temple a one-point lead less than two minutes into the second session. Up 31-30, Temple stayed ahead of Penn for the next 17:11.

When the clock approached 1:19 to go in regulation, Penn senior Zach Rosen sent the crowd into a raucous when he buried one of his seven three-pointers to put the Quakers back in front for the first time since the 6:05 mark of the first half. Rosen had 14 of his game-high 27 points in the second half.

Following Moore's equalizing free throw with 1:10 remaining. Fernandez was called for a carry with seven seconds left on the game clock, which set the Quakers up with a chance for the final shot of regulation. As the horn sounded, senior Tyler Bernardini's long-range trey was off the rim, sending the Owls and Quakers to an extra session.

Temple was without junior guard Khalif Wyatt as he was serving a one-game suspension for a minor internal matter.

From here, the Owls leave for San Juan, Puerto Rico where they will open play in the 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off, which is slated to begin Thursday when they take on Western Michigan at 10:30 a.m. The game can be seen live on ESPNU. Temple is guaranteed to play three games during their stay in Puerto Rico.
