Bridget Settles Named A-10 Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year; Seven Other Owls Also Honored

2011 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey All-Conference Teams
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple's Bridget Settles was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year and Massachusetts' Alesha Widdall was tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Year in voting conducted among the conference's head coaches. Settles and seven other Owls were honored with recognition to either the first team, second team, rookie team or honorable mention.
The coaches tabbed Richmond's Rebecca Barry as Rookie of the Year and La Salle's third-year head coach Michelle Marks as Coach of the Year.
Settles started in all 20 games for the Owls this season and leads the team in points (40), goals (18) and game-winning goals (6). The flagship attacker of the Temple squad, Settles is responsible for over half her team's 33 goals this season. The senior is ranked 18th in the nation in goals per game (0.9) and 27th for points per game (2.0). Settles, now a 2011 A-10 First Team selection, was also named to the 2010 A-10 First Team and is a three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honoree in 2011.
Joining Settles on the A-10 First Team is Temple junior Katie Briglia who has recorded five assists this season to lead the Owls, along with two goals for nine total points. Briglia scored the game-winning goal for Temple in a 4-1 rout of Saint Joseph's.
Temple seniors Becca Keener and Kaylee Keener were both named to the A-10 Second Team, while fellow senior Carissa Young earned honorable mention honors. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lizzy Millen and freshmen Nicole Kroener and Amber Youtz were all named to the All-Rookie Team.
Settles was one of 11 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Conference team for their dedication to academics as well as athletics. To be nominated, a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) for her entire academic career. Making up the 2011 Academic All-Conference Team are La Salle's Rebecca Chylack, Lindsay Fry and Janel Paukovits, Lock Haven's Nicole Weaknecht, Massachusetts' Alesha Widdall and Kim Young, Richmond's Katelin Peterson, Meghan Githens of Saint Joseph's, Ellen Rowe and Theresa Testa, and Temple's Bridget Settles.
The 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, at Saint Joseph's University's Ellen Ryan Field. It will be streamed live, free of charge, on atlantic10.com. First up for third-seeded Temple is a semifinal match-up with second-seeded UMass at 2:00 p.m.
