PHILADELPHIA - Making its ninth-straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Temple field hockey is looking for its first championship since 1994. First up in that quest, the third-seeded Owls (8-12) will face second-seeded Massachusetts (7-10) at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 in the A-10 Semifinals at Saint Joseph's Ellen Ryan Field. Series Record: Temple and Massachusetts first met in 1978, and the Minutewomen hold a 31-10 record against the Cherry and White. Temple is 3-8 all time against Massachusetts in the A-10 Tournament. When the two teams met on Temple's home field on Oct. 23, UMass won 2-1 in OT.
The tournament's other semifinal features top-seeded Richmond (13-6) playing fourth-seeded La Salle (8-10). Temple defeated both of those teams in the 2011 regular season.
A-10 Tournament: Temple has qualified for the A-10 Tournament the last eight seasons, with its last title coming in 1994 over Massachusetts by a score of 1-0. The Owls' last appearance in the final came in 2009 when they fell to Richmond by a score of 3-0.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Bridget Settles leads the Owls in goals (18), points (40), shots (77), and shots on goal (46), and has scored six game-winning goals this season, all of which also lead all players in the A-10 Conference. Her 18 goals rank her 18th in the nation in goals per game at 0.90. Settles ranks in a tie for second on the team in assists with four, and has taken home three A-10 Performer of the Week honors this season.
Atlantic 10 Honors: Senior Bridget Settles was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and seven other Owls were also honored with recognition to either the first team, second team, rookie team or honorable mention. The flagship attacker of the squad, Settles is responsible for over half the team's 33 goals this season. Joining Settles on the A-10 First Team is junior Katie Briglia, who has recorded five assists this season to lead the Owls. Seniors Becca Keener and Kaylee Keener were both named to the A-10 Second Team, while fellow senior Carissa Young earned honorable mention honors. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lizzy Millen and freshmen Nicole Kroener and Amber Youtz were all named to the All-Rookie Team. Settles was also one of 11 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Conference team for their dedication to academics as well as athletics.
Goaltending: With three shutouts this season, redshirt freshman and A-10 All-Rookie honoree Lizzy Millen is tied for second in the A-10. She ranks fourth in the league in saves with 89, and fifth in saves per game. Millen has started all 20 games in goal for the Owls, and had big shoes to fill this season after the graduation of senior Sarah Dalrymple last year.
