PHILADELPHIA - In shutout fashion, the third-seeded Temple field hockey team cruised into tomorrow's Atlantic 10 Champoinship game with a 4-0 rout of second-seeded Massachusetts on Friday afternoon. The Owls (9-12) avenged a regular season 2-1 overtime loss to the Minutewomen (7-11), and will face top-seeded Richmond in the final game at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Saint Joseph's Ellen Ryan Field.

It was a battle the of A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, Temple forward Bridget Settles, and the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Massachusetts goalkeeper Alesha Widdall. Settles got the best of that battle this afternoon with two goals, including one on a penalty stroke.

Just under 10 minutes into the game, Amber Youtz collected the ball after a rebounded save by Widdall and re-directed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Temple lead.

It was just the beginning of what would be a dominant offensive first half for the Owls, who out-shot the Minutewomen 9-2. In the 25th minute, Temple got a penalty stroke opportunity and Settles lined up to take it. She drove a hard shot past Widdall, converting on her fourth of four penalty strokes this season and giving Temple a 2-0 lead.

UMass began to show a sense of urgency in the second half and picked up its presense on offense, but despite out-shooting the Owls 7-6 in the half, it was Temple who scored yet again.

On a breakaway down the field, Tori Cox fed Caryn Lambright who was open inside the circle and crossed the ball to the left of Widdall for Temple's third tally of the contest.

With 14 minutes remaining, Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen made a diving save on a great shot by Nicole Cordero to preserve the shutout, and a short time later Mandi Shearer got the ball out of the backfield after Millen had come out for a save, robbing the Minutewomen of a prime scoring opportunity.

With 6:29 remaining, Katie Briglia sent in a long ball from outside the circle that deflected off Widdall's pads and was put in for goal number four by Settles.

UMass had a penalty corner chance with three minutes left, but new goalkeeper Haley Mitchell came up with an impressive save on a shot by the Minutewomen. She went on to make two big saves in her short time in goal to keep UMass scoreless in the contest. Millen finished with three saves for the Owls, while Widdall made six for UMass.
