Field Hockey Season Ends in the A-10 Championship Game With a 1-0 Loss to Richmond

Owls' Lizzy Millen makes career-high 11 saves but offense falters in loss

PHILADELPHIA - Despite a career-high 11 saves from redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lizzy Millen, the Temple field hockey team couldn't get its offense going in a 1-0 loss to Richmond in the A-10 Championship game on Saturday afternoon at Saint Joseph's Ellen Ryan Field. For her efforts in today's game and yesterday's 4-0 win over UMass, Millen was not only named to the All-Tournament Team but also earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the tournament.

Temple concludes the season at 9-13 overall, while Richmond improves to 15-6 and will advance to a play-in game vs. the winner of the Nor Pac Conference to try to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Richmond controlled the offense for the entire game, forcing Millen to play the game of her life to keep the Owls in it, which is exactly what she did. After a string of impressive saves about nine minutes into the contest, a Temple foul inside the circle led to a penalty corner opportunity for Richmond. The Spiders' Emily Straniero took the shot on the corner, which Millen deflected but unfortunately for Temple, the ball went off her pads and into the top of the goal.

The 1-0 lead would stand for the remainder of the game, despite Richmond finishing with an 18-2 edge in total shots and a nine to two advantage in penalty corner chances.

Millen came up with great saves time and time again, but on the offensive end of the field, Temple just could not convert. Becca Keener came into the game with 6:52 remaining, replacing Millen as a kicking back which allowed her to make saves with her feet while still play outside the circle. Ultimately, Keener was not forced to make any saves but Temple was unable to take advantage offensively either.

Also named to the All-Tournament Team for Temple were senior Bridget Settles, who scored twice in the Owls' 4-0 semifinal win, and junior Katie Briglia.
