HOUSTON, Texas – Having just a day off in between games, the Temple men's basketball team shifts to Houston for the second phase of its Texas road trip when it takes on Rice University Monday (9:00 p.m. ET/TCN/1210 AM WHTP) in what will be the battle of the two Owls at the Tudor Center. It's been nearly 63 years since the last time the two teams collided, with the last meeting occurring way back on Dec. 29, 1948. Temple owns the only win in the all-time series, as it defeated Rice, 70-59. Monday evening will mark the third time six-year head coach Fran Dunphy has coached against the Owls of Rice. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Dunphy's Quakers split meetings between the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.
Temple is coming off Saturday's 77-65 loss at the University of Texas. Senior Ramone Moore (17.8 ppg) scored 13 points, which was just enough for him to eclipse the 1000th point of his Temple career, making him the 47th member in school history to accomplish the milestone. Junior Khalif Wyatt (15.8 ppg) was a game-high scorer with his season-high 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Senior Juan Fernandez (11.7 ppg.) enters Monday evening's tilt three points short of the 1000-point plateau. Fernandez leads the Owls with 19 three pointers made (2.1 mpg), keeping him 21 treys away breaking into the school's top 10 for three pointers in a career. After going four-of-six from the field at Texas, junior Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (9.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg) holds the team's highest shooting percentage (.603). Redshirt freshman Anthony Lee (5.0 ppg., 6.7 rpg.) has started the last five games, where he has been a bright spot at times while filling in for injured graduate student forward Micheal Eric (10.5 ppg, 11.3 rpg). Last week, Lee picked up Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors after his strong play in the Owls' win over Villanova (Dec. 10). With the absence of forwards Eric and senior Scootie Randall, the Owls have played with four guards in their lineup at times with sophomore Aaron Brown (7.6 ppg.), redshirt junior T.J. DiLeo (3.3 ppg,) and freshman Will Cummings (2.0 ppg.) all in the mix.
Rice is led by longtime head coach Ben Braun, who is now in his third year at the helm of the Owls. Before arriving in Houston to take over Rice, Braun was the head coach at Siena Heights (1977-85), Eastern Michigan (1986-96) and at California (1996-2008). When Rice tips off against Temple, it will be the first time in all 34 years of coaching that Braun has coached against the Owls from North Philadelphia.
Rice is hosting Temple in the finale of their four-game homestand on the hardwood of Autry Court. On Saturday night, the Owls fell for the first time this season at home, losing 87-81 to Lamar. Despite the loss, senior Connor Frizzelle (9.2 ppg) scored the 1000th point of his Rice career. Junior guard Tamir Jackson led the Owls with 24 points against the Cardinals. So far this season, Jackson is second on the team with 14.3 ppg.
In the frontcourt, forward Arsalan Kazemi has paced the Owls by averaging double figures in points and rebounds, having 14.6 ppg and 12.3 rpg. Against Lamar, Kazemi finished with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Before Saturday's defeat, Rice's only other losses were on a neutral site when it was downed by Northern Iowa and Iowa State at the South Padre Island Invitational.
