PHILADELPHIA – Temple field hockey coach Amanda Janney has signed 10 student-athletes for the 2011 season, an incoming class that includes nine true freshmen along with one sophomore transfer.
Jill Keeney (Springfield, Pa./The Shipley School) joins the Owls after spending the 2010 season at Fairfield University.
The nine true freshmen are Natasha Backman (Fort Monmouth, N.J./Monmouth Regional), Kathy Bostion (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), BriAna Bullock (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley), Sydney Hibshman (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), Nicole Kroener (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley), Haley Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico), Rachel Steinman (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), Hannah Whitman (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Amber Youtz (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin).
Jill Keeney played in 18 games for Fairfield as a freshman, scoring one goal and tallying two assists. She was a four-time first team all-league selection at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, as well as a three-time All Main Line honoree, two-time MVP and two-year team captain. Keeney's team was 15-0 her senior year and league champs for the second year in a row.
As a three-year varsity starter for Monmouth Regional High School, Natasha Backman was named third-team all-conference as well as all-division in her senior year. Also in her final season, Backman was team captain and led the team in scoring to earn Offensive MVP of the Year and Best Teammate of the Year awards.
Kathy Bostion was a three-year varsity starter for Central Dauphin High School and coach Janelle (Kern) Burger. She was a conference all-star first team selection as a junior, and her team advanced as far as the state final four in her sophomore year. Bostion's PA Mavericks Club team won their USFHA National Festival pool in both 2009 and 2010.
As a three-year varsity letterwinner at Rancocas Valley Regional High School, BriAna Bullock set a record with 13 defensive saves in her senior year and was named first team on defense for the Liberty Division. Bullock's team was 15-6 in her final season and tallied a conference record of 7-1 en route to the division championship.
An all-state honorable mention selection in her senior year, Sydney Hibshman helped lead her Parkland High School team to a runner-up finish in the conference. In her junior year the team was a state semi-finalist with a record of 20-4. Hibshman was named a 2010 Gladiator by the SGI/NFHCA High School National Academic Squad as a senior as well as a team captain.
Nicole Kroener was an all-state honorable mention selection as a senior at Twin Valley High School, where she was two-time team captain and three-time all-division honoree. Kroener earned Berks All-Academic honors all four years of her career, and was named a 2010 Gladiator by the SGI/NFHCA High School National Academic Squad.
Haley Mitchell's Cocolico High School team made it to the state finals in her senior year, and she was an all-state second team selection as well as a two-time Lancaster-Lebanon first team all-star. As starting goalkeeper, Mitchell had a saves percentage of 87 in her senior year while her team finished with a record of 21-6 overall and 13-0 in Section II. Mitchell has been selected as one of the top Goalkeepers in Pennsylvania as a member of the USFHA National Futures Tournament in 2008 and 2009.
As an all-state first team selection her senior year, Rachel Steinman led her Upper Perkiomen High School team to a runner-up finish in the district and to the first round of the state championships. Steinman was a four-year varsity starter and three-time first team all-area honoree. She was Upper Perkiomen's leading scorer as a senior with 14 goals, also tallying 10 assists and 12 defensive saves.
Named to the all-state second team as a senior, Hannah Whitman helped lead her Cedar Crest High School team to the district playoffs for the first time since 2004. She also earned academic all-star and all-state honors while serving as team captain. Whitman was coached by Olympian, Dana Sensenig, who represented the USA in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing before becoming the field hockey coach at Cedar Crest.
As a four-year varsity letterwinner at Central Dauphin along with fellow recruit Kathy Bostion, Amber Youtz was named the Mid Penn Player of the Year as a senior. She was also a first team all-state selection after earned second team all-state honors in her junior year. Youtz was selected for the USFHA National Futures Tournament in 2010 and Futures Elite. She led her Key State Club team to win their NIT pool and their National Festival pool as junior. Youtz was a two-time team MVP and was team captain as a senior.
