PHIL:ADELPHIA - Temple returns to the Liacouras Center after a two-game hiatus to take on Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island in front of nationally televised audience on Saturday afternoon (2:00 p.m./ESPN2). The game will also be the annual Hooter The Owl's Birthday party with the first 1500 kids ages 14 and under receiving a Temple basketball replica jersey, sponsored by the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. Local team mascots including the Phillies phanatic will be on hand for a fun-filled game.
The Owls, under the direction of Fran Dunphy, have won three straight to improve to 16-5 overall and 6-2 in league play. Senior forward Lavoy Allen (10.7 ppg./6.6 rpg.) became the fifth Temple player to grab 1000 career boards with seven in Temple's win over La Salle, which marked Dunphy's 100th win at Temple.
Junior Ramone Moore (14.2 ppg.) continues to pace a balanced offensive attack that includes four double-figure scorers. Juniors Scootie Randall (10.6 ppg.) and Juan Fernandez (10.2 ppg.), who made his first start in two games at La?Salle, join Allen and Moore as double-digit scorers while sophomore Khalif Wyatt (9.1 ppg.) has averaged 17.6 points over the last five outings.
Rhode Island, under the direction of 10th year head coach Jim Baron, comes into Saturday's contest 13-8, 4-3 in league play. The Rams got off to a hot start in A-10 play going 3-1 in their first four games, but have won only one of the last three. Senior forward Delroy James leads URI in scoring (17.6 ppg.) and rebounding (7.7 ppg.). Rhode Island also has double-figure scorers in sophomore forward Nikola Malesevic (10.5 ppg.) and senior guard Marquis Jones (10.3 ppg.).Temple leads the all-time series owning a 54-15 record against Rhode Island.
