Owls rally to force extras in ninth, out-hit Blue Hens 17-13

NEWARK, Del. - The Temple baseball team held the lead twice in the Owls' Liberty Bell Classic opener against Delaware and, despite rallying to force extra innings in the ninth, lost 15-12 to the Blue Hens. Temple is now 14-8, 0-1 in Liberty Bell Classic action, while Delaware improves to 13-12, 1-0 in the LBC.
Seven Owls' hurlers logged innings in today's contest, starting with freshman Zach Batchelor. Batchelor tossed 3.1 innings to get the Owls going, striking out a pair and walking three. Junior Tyler Horst came for 1.0 innings, followed by classmate Jimmy Devine for 1.2 scoreless frames of work. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic allowed two runs securing just one out, being relieved by the tandem of redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak and senior Ben White, who gave up no runs over a combined 2.2 innings. Freshman Phil Gianakos threw the 10th, allowing two earned runs to card the loss.
Senior Adrian Perez (5-6, 4 RBI, HR, 2B) had a stellar day at the plate, recording a game-best five hits and four RBI on a double and a homer. Seniors Byron McKoy (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Ryan Ferguson (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI), along with junior Cameron Green (2-5, 2B, HR), all added a pair of RBI, with Ferguson extending his hit streak to 24 games.
Delaware utilized a platoon of pitchers as well, with sophomore Matt Soren taking the first five innings of the contest and allowing four earned runs. Sophomore Stephen Richter closed the final three frames, limiting Temple to two runs to earn the win.
Temple took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Perez singled and scored on a double to left by Nikorak. The Blue Hens took their first lead of the game with a pair of runs inthe bottom of the frame, but the Owls responded to regain the lead with two in the top of the second.
Senior Ben Flanary led off the second with a single through the right side, moving into scoring position on a groundout by junior Jabair Khan. McKoy stepped in a roped a double to right center to plate Ferguson, while a double to left by Perez scored McKoy and gave TU a 3-2 lead.
The Owls added to their lead with a run in the top of the fourth, as Green doubled to start things off. Green advanced to third on a groundout by Khan, scoring on a sacrifice fly by McKoy.
Back-to-back four run innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth could have put the Owls out for good, but Temple again responded, this time with five runs in the top of the sixth to come within one at 10-9. Green drew a walk to begin the monster inning, with Khan reaching on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second, also chasing Delaware starter Soren. McKoy, as the next batter, was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Perez, who belted a single to left to plate two. Ferguson kept the scoring going, digging in as the next batter and doubling to center to score another pair of runs. He would eventually plate on a single by freshman Will Remillard.
Temple then tied the game up in the top of the seventh, again on the bat of Perez. The senior shortstop this time cracked a solo-shot to left center, his second of the year.
It was the Blue Hens that would take the next lead, however, picking up two in the top of the eighth to take a 12-10 advantage. Again the Owls would go away without a fight, with Green coming up as the hero in this inning. Sophomore Daniel Dragos drew a walk to lead off the inning, setting up a two-run homer to right by Green to tie the game at 12-12. White held Delaware scoreless in the ninth, giving Temple one more chance at winning the contest.
The Owls looked poised to take the lead in the top of the 10th, with senior Rafael Cordero doing his job as the lead off hitter and singling to start things off. Cordero would advance to second but no further.
Delaware found a way to get it done in the 10th, with the first two batters of the frame reaching base to set up a game-winning three-run homer by sophomore Nick Ferdinand.
Temple returns to action this weekend, traveling to Dayton on April 1-3.
