Diamond Owls Take Talents To Dayton This Weekend

Owls continue to lead nation in batting average, rank second in hits

PHILADELPHIA - Still boasting the nation's top-ranked offense, the Temple baseball team travels to Dayton this weekend for a three-game set against the Flyers beginning Friday at Time Warner Cable Stadium (April 1-3).  Temple, ranked first in the country in batting and second in hits, owns a 14-8 overall record and is looking to lift its 1-2 Atlantic 10 mark this weekend.

Temple is batting .368 (313-850) as a team, combining for 91 extra base hits and 212 runs scored.  As a unit, the Owls rank second in the nation in doubles per game with 2.71.  Temple is coming off of a hard-fought weekend at Xavier to open conference play, and a heartbreaking loss to Delaware in extras of the team's Liberty Bell Classic opener.

The main reason the Owls lead the nation in hitting is due to the fact that five starters are batting above .400 to this point in the year.  Senior shortstop Adrian Perez leads the team and is tied for 19th nationally with 44 hits (.415, 44-106), topping the Owls with an impressive 16 multi-hit games.  The Woodland, Calif., native also leads the team with 12 doubles, tied for eighth in the country in that category.

Junior Taylor Juran ranks second on the team behind Perez batting .410 (25-61), followed by redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak who is hitting .409 (38-93).  Nikorak boasts nine doubles and four home runs on the year, scoring a team-best 39 times this season to rank fifth nationally in runs scored per game (1.38 rpg.).

To say senior Ryan Ferguson has been consistent this season is an understatement, as the Glen Mills, Pa., native has hit safely in 24-straight games dating back to last season.  Ferguson, batting .406 (39-96) with a team-high six homers, leads the Owls with 31 RBI and ranks 10th in the nation with 1.38 RBI per game.

Senior Byron McKoy rounds out the starters batting .400, recording an average of .404 (40-99).  The Charlotte, N.C., native is on the milestone watch for Temple, just two hits shy of passing Sean Barksdale (222, 2007-09) for fifth all-time in Temple history.

Being overshadowed by the incredible amount of upperclassman production is freshman Will Remillard, who is quietly batting .391 (27-69) in 17 starts at catcher this season.  The Cohoes, N.Y., native had put together a 10-game hit streak earlier this year, and has recorded five doubles, two home runs and 17 RBI.

Temple will send senior ace Ben White (3-3, 3.92 ERA) to the hill on Friday (3:00 p.m.), going against junior Cameron Hobson (3-2, 2.68 ERA) of Dayton.  Hobson leads the conference with 46 strikeouts, nearly matched by White who ranks fourth with 35.  On Saturday (1:00 p.m.), junior Brant Norlander (3-0, 3.79) gets the nod against junior Burny Mitchem (0-2, 1.68 ERA), and fans will see freshman Matt Hockenberry (2-1, 6.15 ERA) face junior Tim Bury (0-1, 3.27 ERA) on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).

Scouting the Flyers...

Dayton (12-12) opens Atlantic 10 play against the Owls, having only won two of the last seven contests.  The Flyers dropped four straight before picking up a win over Pepperdine, and most recently topped Miami (Ohio), 6-0.  Junior C.J. Gilman leads Dayton batting .351 (33-94), posting 10 doubles and driving in 13 runs.

Series History...
The Flyers hold the advantage in the all-time series with a 12-10 record against Temple.  Dayton swept the Owls at Skip Wilson Field last season to go ahead in the all-time series, with it previously favoring Temple 10-9.  Temple last topped the Flyers in 2009, taking two of three games that year.
