Men's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day Saturday Against La Salle
3.4.11 | Men's Basketball
Lavoy Allen and six other seniors to be honored in pregame ceremony
Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's basketball team has two streaks on the line when it hosts La Salle in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m./OwlAccess). The Owls (23-6, 13-2 A-10, 2-1 Big 5) bring a 21-game Liacouras Center win streak into the final home game for senior forward Lavoy Allen and graduate student Dutch Gaitley. They also own a 10-game win streak against A-10 opponents. A win would tie the Liacouras Center home win streak record and also give the Owls their longest win streak against A-10 foes since the 1987-88 squad went 18-0 in league play.
At halftime the 1968-69 Temple men's basketball team will be introduced as the newest members of the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame. It is also Hatfield Dollar Hot Dog Day and Parent-Child Layup Day. All kids ages 14 and under – with one accompanying adult – can score a basket on the court after the game.
Even though Gaitley, a first-year Owl, and five managers -Anthony DiLoreto, Megan Kita, Tyler Laurie, Sean Phelan and Jessica Gray, will also be honored, the day will belong to the program's lone senior Allen. The Morrisville, Pa. native will go down as arguably one of the top forwards to wear the Cherry and White. He owns Temple's all-time rebounds record with 1,092 boards, but also is among the top five all-time in blocked shots and field goal percentage. He is on a tear of late, recording four straight double-doubles and nine on the season.
Allen (11.3 ppg., 8.1 rpg.) has been far from a one-man show. Junior Ramone Moore (14.7 ppg.) continues to lead the Owls in scoring while junior Juan Fernandez (10.3 ppg.) also scores in double figures. Sophomore Rahlir Jefferson (5.8 ppg.) and freshman Aaron Brown (2.7 ppg) have filled in admirably as starters replacing injured Michael Eric and Scootie Randall while A-10 Sixth Man of the Year candidate Khalif Wyatt (9.2 ppg.) provides an offensive spark off the bench.
La Salle (14-16, 6-9, 2-1)boasts a balanced offensive attack with sophomore forward Aaric Murray (15. ppg., 7.4 rpg.) leading the way. Jerrell Williams (13.8 ppg., 7.7 rpg.) leads the Explorers in rebounding while Ruben Guillandeaux (12.4 ppg,), who missed the first meeting between the teams, rounds out the team's double-figure scorers.
The Owls, who can clinch a share of the A-10 regular season title with a win and a Xavier loss at Saint Louis, lead the series, 67-40, and won the first meeting at Tom Gola Arena, 71-67, on Feb. 2.
