Volleyball Set for Temple Invitational and Parents Weekend to Open the 2011 Season

PHILADELPHIA - The 2011 season is just three days away for the Temple volleyball team, as the Owls will welcome Stony Brook, South Carolina, Montana and their parents for a weekend of exciting match-ups at McGonigle Hall. The Temple Invitational begins on Friday, Aug. 26 at 3:00 p.m. with a match between Montana and South Carolina, followed by Temple vs. Stony Brook at 5:30 p.m.
Members of the team discussed their excitement about their families coming to campus this weekend, as well as thoughts on the tournament in interviews that can be seen HERE. Seen on the video are sophomores Emily Frazer, Gabriella Matautia, and Caitlin McMillen along with redshirt freshman Marika DeSanctis.
Montana is coming off a 13-15 season and just narrowly defeated the Owls 3-2 in August of 2010, the first meeting ever between the two teams. South Carolina suffered similar struggles to the Owls last season, finishing with a record of 7-23. Temple earned a win in its only match against South Carolina back in 1982.
The Owls will begin tournament play against Stony Brook as the two programs meet for the first time. The Seawolves went 11-18 last season, with a 6-6 record in the America East.
Temple and first-year head coach Bakeer Ganes look to turn things around in 2011 after a 4-25 season last year. Eight letterwinners return from last season including three starters. The Owls will take part in four early-season tournaments before beginning Atlantic 10 play on Sept. 23 at Xavier.
