PHILADELPHIA - Dominating performances offensively and defensively led the Temple volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Rhode Island (9-7, 1-1) by scores of 25-19, 27-25 and 25-20. Collin Wallace led the Owls (5-11, 1-2) with a double-double of 16 kills and 12 digs, while Chelsea Tupuola recorded an impressive 25 digs in the three-set match.
It was the first Atlantic 10 home match for Temple, who was bolstered the whole way by an enthusiastic crowd decked out for "80's Night." Gabriella Matautia was strong for the Owls with 14 kills, while Elyse Burkert recorded 10 kills and eight digs. Tiffany Connatser had 38 assists to go with seven digs and two blocks.
The Owls rode the momentum of the crowd to an easy first-set win, with 15 kills and only two errors. Wallace was perfect with six kills and zero errors, and at one point served up two straight aces.
An intense second set saw 12 ties and four lead changes, but the Owls had to recover from letting an early, six-point lead slip away. Temple remained confident and was able to fight off two set points for Rhode Island to tie the score at 24-24. After fighting off yet another set point, back-to-back kills from Wallace and Connatser gave Temple a set point of its own, and Rikia Trischuk served up an ace to put the match at 2-0 in favor of the Owls.
The third set was tied midway through at 15-15 before Temple began to pull away, led by Burkert and Matautia who each recorded five kills in the set.
Rhode Island was led by Kayla Wilson with 14 kills and nine digs, as well as libero Lindsay Potts with 20 digs.
Temple will be back in action at home tomorrow night against Fordham at 7:00 p.m. The Owls are inviting all junior club and middle school teams for "Team Night" at McGonigle Hall.
