2012 Temple Field Hockey Roster
PHILADELPHIA – Temple field hockey coach Amanda Janney has signed eight student-athletes for the 2012 season, an incoming class of true freshmen who are all natives of Pennsylvania.
The eight recruits are Sarah Deck (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson), Alyssa Delp (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area), Amanda Fuertsch (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Alyssa Hughes (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), Kayla Laughman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), Tricia Light (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona), Taylor Shronk (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Erin VanHorn (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area).
“The coaching staff and I would like to welcome these eight outstanding players into our TUFH family,” said Janney. “In starting my eighth season at Temple, I am pleased that our recruiting class is so strong. These players are from some of the best high schools and club teams in the nation, and their playing experience from national tournaments will help our team in the fall.
“I feel confident that this group of freshmen will make an immediate push for playing time. After spending a lot of time recruiting these talented student-athletes and getting to know their families, I'm excited that they will soon be on Geasey Field's turf. We would like to thank their families and their high school and club coaches for their help and support during the recruiting process.
“Our team is focused on the Atlantic 10 Conference and these freshmen will be the spark that we will need to lead our team through a successful run in the A-10.”
Sarah Deck is an all-state second team selection out of Wilson High School where she helped lead her team to a division championship each year of her career. She was also named first team all-county as a senior and team captain. She was named the Top Academic Senior for Berks County in her senior year, and was the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Conference representative for her school as well as being a member of the National Honor Society.
We are fortunate that Sarah choose field hockey as she is a tremendously talented athlete who also excelled in softball,” said Janney. “We're pleased that she chose Division I as I know she will be happy with the challenge of our competitive environment. Her work ethic and positive attitude really impressed me. She is a versatile player who will compete for playing time as a forward and midfielder.”
Alyssa has the speed and quickness that we look for in forwards,” said Janney. “She comes from the same High Styx club that produced Charise Young and Carissa Young. Alyssa has helped High Styx win at National Indoors and the National Festival Tournament. She is a fierce competitor and she will be a great addition to our front line.”
Amanda Fuertsch helped lead her team at Owen J. Roberts High School to a 23-3 overall record as a senior including a perfect 13-0 PAC 10 league record. She was an all-area and all-southeastern Pennsylvania first team selection, and was an all-area second team selection as a junior. Amanda is the sister of rising junior Emily Fuertsch, and both played for Clarence Janelle's X-Calibur Field Hockey club. Amanda coaches youth soccer and field hockey and will major in elementary education. She was a member of the National Honor Society at Owen J. Roberts.
“We are thrilled to have Amanda join our Temple Field Hockey family as a teammate now, instead of just as a sibling,” said Janney. “She has been attending games for years watching Emily compete and I am happy that next season she will be in a Temple jersey. She is an intelligent player and I know she will be able to make an immediate impact on our midfield.”
Alyssa Hughes led her Unionville High School team to the district finals as a senior and to the state tournament for the first time since 1993. She was an all-area honoree and a member of the National Honor Society, and is contemplating majoring in kinesiology at Temple.
“Alyssa is a talented and disciplined defender from the Mystx club,” said Janney. “She is an experienced and smart player who has been to National Festival and NIT's. She was a captain at Unionville and I expect her to bring her maturity and her leadership skills to our team.”
Kayla Laughman was a three-year letterwinner in both field hockey and soccer at Warwick High School, the same school as graduating Temple senior Becca Keener. She was coached by Hall of Fame Coach Bob Derr, and was a second team all-star as both a junior and senior. Laughman helped her team to the 2011 Lancaster Lebanon Championship and to the PA State AAA Final Game. Kayla's father, Jim, earned his master's at Temple in the late 90's.
“We are so happy to have another outstanding Warwick defender wear a Temple uniform,” said Janney. “Like our other Warwick/TUFH Alumni, Becca and Kate Stewart, Kayla brings that hard-working and no-nonsense attitude that was instilled in her from Lititz, Pa. She is coming to Temple for her degree in business and I know she will also have a great student-athlete experience in Philadelphia.”
Three-time all-league first team selection Tricia Light joins the Owls from Annville-Cleona High School. She was a two-time team captain and Lebanon Daily News First Team honoree as a senior midfielder who led the team with 16 assists over her last two seasons. She was the 2011 PIAA-AA District 3 Track and Field 100m Hurdle Champion, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Tricia's sister, Caitlin, played soccer at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa., and was team captain as a senior in 2011.
“Tricia is another well-rounded, multi-sport athlete who we were lucky to recruit,” said Janney. “She has improved tremendously during the last two years that I have watched her play. She will excel in the high pace of Division I field hockey and I know she will love Temple for both her international business major and also for the diversity of all that there is to do and see in the city.”
Taylor Shronk, a classmate of signee Amanda Fuertsch, was an all-conference and all-area selection as a senior while also serving as team captain and earning the Coaches Award. She helped lead the team to three PAC-10 conference championships and three titles at the Raider Classic.
“Taylor is a strong, competitive athlete who impressed me the first few minutes I watched her,” said Janney. “She is a student-athlete who has garnered many athletic and academic honors and she will continue to impress many as a collegiate athlete. She was highly recommended by her X-Calibur club and her high school coach, Clarence Janelle.”
Two-time team MVP Erin VanHorn was team captain as a senior at Elizabethtown High School. She traveled to NIT and Festival with Sutter's Brigade Club team and she was recognized on the 2011 Lancaster-Lebanon All-Star team. Off the field, VanHorn was named to Team America in 2008 for inline hockey at State Wars, the United States Roller Hockey Championships.
“Erin comes from a strong field hockey tradition at Elizabethtown High School,” said Janney. “She was inspired to come to Temple by E-town alumni and TUFH players Alli Lokey and Mandi Shearer, and I know she will bring a high level of dedication and teamwork as taught by E-town coach Andy Derr.”

Alyssa Delp comes to Temple from Fleetwood Area High School where she was a first team all-state selection as a junior and senior. She helped get her team to Pennsylvania's AA State Quarterfinals, which was the furthest in Fleetwood's school history. She was also named this year's Berks County Player of the Year. Delp was team captain as a senior, and was also an all-division player on the soccer team.
