PHILADELPHIA— For the third time in a calendar year, redshirt senior Travis Mahoney has won an individual Atlantic 10 Conference title. On Saturday, as Temple University hosted the 2012 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships at Belmont Plateau at West Fairmount Park, Mahoney crossed the finish in a first place time of 25:1.5 in the men's 8k race, helping the Owls take fourth place, which is the highest they have ever finished at an Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
As a team, the Owls collected 127 points, which was only short of defending champion La Salle (122), Saint Joseph's (121) and Butler (38), who won the league title in its first season as a conference member.
"The team overall did an outstanding job," first-year assistant coach Adam Bray said. "We talked all week that if we could score 100 points, we could be fourth place, judging from year's past...We were six points out of second place. In the grand scheme of things, that is very small in cross country. So, in my opinion, this is a very good team and the guys have come to life here, especially in the past couple weeks, so that was exciting to see. I think we surprised a few people in the conference from the way that we ran."
Mahoney defeated defending champion from La Salle, Alfredo Santana, who crossed the line just five seconds after the Old Bridge, N.J. native.
Joining Mahoney on the 15-member All-Atlantic 10 Conference team was junior Will Kellar, who placed 14th among the 136 individuals with his time of 26:08.4.
Mahoney and Kellar become the second and third runners in Temple Cross Country history to be named to the All-Conference team. The only other runner for the Owls to be honored was Mike May back in 2008 when he placed eighth in the A-10 Championship held in St. Louis, where the team earned a fifth place finish.
Placing just outside of the top 15, but turning in a solid finish time was sophomore Cullen Davis, who elapsed the 8k course in 26:15.9 for 17th place.
Sophomore Matt Kacyon came placed a Temple's fourth-fastest runner with a 27th place time 26:34.5, while freshman Steven Flynn rounded out the top five for the Owls with a time of 27:26.3.
Mahoney's A-10 Outstanding Performer of the Year award is the third one he has received in2012. Back on Feb. 18, he earned the title at the Indoor Track and Field Championships before being tabbed with the honor at the Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 6.
Temple will now prepare for its race on Nov. 9 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, which will be held by Penn State.
