Nikorak ties Tom Whalen with most doubles in a TU career with 54
GREENSBORO, NC—Due to inclement weather washing out the rest of Friday's series-opening game for Temple and North Carolina A&T, the Owls picked up its 7-2 lead on the Aggies when the game resumed on Saturday in the third inning. Temple went on to take the first game of what became a doubleheader, 13-9, before falling by a count of 6-3 in game two.
[Game 1]: The starting pitcher for the Owls was sophomore right-hander, Matt Hockenberry, who went two innings before the delay Friday.
In Hockenberry's two innings of work, he allowed one hit while striking out four of the nine batters he faced.
Offensively before the rain, redshirt senior Steve Nikorak had an RBI single in the first inning, scoring junior shortstop Elijah Yarborough with one out, led the Owls.
The first inning also saw a fielder's choice by senior catcher Taylor Juran to the second basemen, which scored Nikorak to put the Owls up 2-0 at the end of the inning.
In the third inning on Friday, the Owls put up five runs.
The runs yet again involved Nikorak who had an RBI double scoring Yarborough.
The double would place Nikorak at 53 doubles in his Temple career placing him one behind the all-time lead.
Other than Nikorak's move towards the milestone, the Owls half was highlighted by sophomore catcher, freshman Connor Reilly's blast that was not only his first collegiate hit, but his first collegiate homerun as well.
The heavy rain would stop the inning during Jordan Queja's at-bat with the Owls up 7-2.
When the game resumed on Saturday, not much was highlighted on the defensive end for the Owls, but there were a couple of offensive highlights in the continuation.
In the eighth inning, Nikorak hit a double, driving in two runs. Not only was it a two run double but the double placed Nikorak tied for the all-time record for doubles in a career with 54.
The ninth inning of the first game this afternoon also saw a Nick Lustrino (FR) single to score Junior David Hall who also singled in the ninth.
The game would come to an end with the Owls on top 13-9.
Hockenberry earned the win and moved to 1-0 on the young season.
[Game 2]: After a short break, the Owls and Aggies would start their regular scheduled game.
Starting the second game for the Owls was freshman left-hander Patrick Peterson. Pat dazzled Aggie batters as he struck out ten of the twenty-one batters he faced in his 5.1 innings of work.
On in relief of freshman Patrick Peterson was his brother Eric Peterson. The righty went two and a third, K'ing two of the eleven batters he faced.
The Owl bats were relatively quiet in game two.
The one notable event came in the ninth inning with one out as junior Henry Knabe hit his first homerun of the season, drawing the Owls closer to the lead making the score 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Owls, they were unable to keep the momentum rolling and couldn't muster anymore runs.
The Owls, now 2-3, will close out the series against North Carolina A&T on Sunday at World War Memorial Stadium. The time of first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
