Freshman Eric Peterson
Owls' Comeback Falls Short; Lose 9-7 To La Salle
3.13.12 | Baseball
Eric Peterson strikes out season-most five batters in season-high 6.0 innings
Box Score
AMBLER – Trailing La Salle 8-0 after the first three innings, the Owls responded with seven unanswered runs to make it a one-run ballgame heading into the eighth inning, but the Explorers' Pat Christensen held the Owls from doing any more damage, as they fell 9-7 on Tuesday at Skip Wilson Field.
Down 8-1, the Owls' offense got going once it figured out La Salle starter Dominc Sgro in the fifth.
Temple split the deficit, scoring three runs in the inning.
Senior Jabair Khan led off the inning with a double before Foster Dunigan smacked a single into center field to bring Khan in to begin the Owls' attempt at a comeback.
Still with no one out, Dunigan made his way to third after a balk and bunt singles by Jordan Queja (3-for-5)and freshman Nick Lustrino (2-for-5)—forcing Sgroi to be taken out of the ballgame in relief of Mike McLeod.
With the bases loaded, redshirt senior Steve Nikorak lifted a ball into center field to score Dunigan on the out. Junior Elijah Yarborough's sacrifice fly two batters later made it an 8-4 game when Queja made his way across the dish.
After Dan Moller was relieved in the middle of the third inning, freshman Eric Peterson took over and put forth his best performance of the season.
The rookie right hander from Bear, Delaware pitched a season-high 6.0 innings and struck out a season-most five batters, while allowing just three hits against 22 batters. His only mistake came in the ninth inning with the Explorers clinging to a one-run lead when La Salle's George Smith, Jr. tacked on an insurance run on his solo home run with two outs.
Peterson was essential in Temple's comeback that came up short.
Just as they did in the fifth, the Owls got their first three batters on base in the seventh inning.
Nikorak, who earlier extended his hitting streak and on base streak, ripped a double in to shallow left center field, scoring Queja.
With at least a hit in each of the last seven games, the Owls' third baseman has now reached base in all 15 games this season after his 2-for-4 day.
Freshman Matt Elko greeted Christensen with a two-run RBI single to score Nikorak and Lustrino to make it an 8-7 game.
Christensen did his part the rest of the way, allowing just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
Temple will get right back to work tomorrow, having little time for turnaround, as it heads to the University of Pennsylvania for another Big 5 rival affair with the Quakers. First pitch from Meiklejohn Stadium is slated for 3:00 p.m. Making his first start of the year for the Owls will be RHP Ryan Kuehn, while right Connor Cuff will be on the hill for the Quakers in his team's 2012 home debut.
