Having played 11 games on the road to open the season, the Temple baseball team (3-8) finally makes its way to Ambler to host its first game of the 2012 season at Skip Wilson Field when it takes on the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on Friday at 2:00 p.m.. Head coach Ryan Wheeler is making his home debut as the Owls' new skipper this weekend, as Temple opens a stretch in which it will host seven of its next eight contests beginning with the Blue Devils, Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks and Iona College Gaels. Live stats and tweeting will be provided for all games.  

The Owls are coming off a span in which they played five games in six days in the state of Virginia, where they went 1-4 through games against Longwood, Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason.

Batting .326 on the year, senior Taylor Juran has been Temple's most consistent hitter in the young season, as he's pounded out at least one hit in all 11 ballgames. Also reaching base in every game to date this season has been redshirt senior Steve Nikorak.

Last weekend in the opening game at Longwood, Nikorak connected on a pitch for the 55th double of his Temple career, giving him the most all-time in program histroy.

Junior Jordan Queja leads the Owls with 15 hits and is ranked second on the team with a .341 batting average.

Freshman Nick Lustrino has made a solid impact in the early days of his Temple career, as he is ranked second on the team with 12 hits and is batting .293 through 10 games. Lustrino collected a team-high eight hits last weekend in the sereis with Longwood.

Temple's starting pitching has been relatively strong in the early going. Sophomore Matt Hockenberry is 1-0 on the year through three starts, freshman Patrick Peterson is still looking to pick up the first victory of collegiate career, despite being dominant in his starts. Peterson is holding opposing hitters to a .190 batting average and has struck out a staff-most 19 hitters. Nikorak has pitched 15.2 innings, the team's most, in which he has built a 3.45 ERA and has built a 1-2 record, including last Sunday's win at Longwood.

Central Connecticut State (1-4)
Central Connecticut State University is only one week into its 2012 campaign. Sporting a 1-4 record coming into today's ballgame, the Blue Devils are coming off a midweek loss at Hartford following its victory at Navy last Sunday. JP Sportman has been CCSU's top hitter - batting .400 and having two home runs. Todd Savatsky will make his second start of the season on the mound today for the Blue Devils

SERIES HISTORY: Friday's meeting between Temple and CCSU will mark the first time since 1977 that these two have gotten together. The Owls defeated the Blue Devils, 9-7 in the first game of the Northeast Regional. The victory for the Owls was the beginning of its run to the College World Series.

Maryland Eastern Shore (0-11)
Maryland Eastern Shore comes into today's game with the Owls after opening its weekend stay in the Philadelphia area with the Villanova Wildcats on Friday. James Newsome leds the Hawks with 13 hits and holds the team's highest batting average at .310 through the team's first 11 games. Tyler Witte is expected to take the mound against Temple. At Cornell, he pitched 4.1 innings and let up only one run.

SERIES HISTORY: Almost a year ago to the day, the Owls had a big day at the plate, exploding for 14 runs en route to defeating the Hawks 14-1 at Skip Wilson Field. Temple leads the all-time series with UMES, 5-1.

Iona College Gaels

Before visiting Saint Joseph's and Villanova earlier this weekend, Iona College is coming off a rough weekend, where it dropped three games to Western Carolina. Mike Chiaravalloti leads the Gaels with 13 hits and a .394 batting average. Beck James has been a major contributor for the team, as he's provided 12 runs batted in. 

SERIES HISTORY: Temple holds the edge in the all-time series with Iona College, winning the only two meetings. It was just last year that the Gaels came to Ambler, where the Owls pulled out the 5-4 victory.
