Baseball Loses 7-5 To Delaware

4.17.12 | Baseball

AMBLER – Temple erased a three-run deficit in in the sixth inning, as it came back from Delaware's 4-1 lead to tie the game at four, but the Owls were never able to jump in front, as the Blue Hens tacked on three in the eighth, helping them defeat Temple, 7-5 at Skip Wilson Field on Tuesday.

In the fifth inning, junior David Hall entered the game as a defensive substitution for junior left fielder Jordan Queja and put up his best effort at the plate this season.

Drawing a walk in the fifth inning was the beginning of Hall reaching base all three times on Tuesday. Trailing by two runs in the sixth, Hall broke an 0-for-14 slump with a two-run RBI single into left field to tie the ballgame at four. Hall helped try to get a rally started in the ninth inning, as he singled to lead off the inning. His two hits on the day matched his season total coming into the game.

Delaware wasted no time getting to Owls' starting right-hander Ryan Kuehn, as it pounded out a first inning run when DJ Long scored from third, as Nick Ferdinand forced him home by reaching base on a fielding error.

The Blue Hen extended the lead in the second to a 2-0 lead, but the Owls found a way to get on the board to cut the lead in half during their second inning at bat. Redshirt freshman Connor Reilly was Temple's first baserunner of the game, as he singled and later scored on junior Foster Dunigan's two out base hit.

Delaware swiped two more runs off of Kuehn, closing the book on his line after 3.2 innings.

Redshirt junior Steve Visnic came in relief and took control. Despite allowing an inherited runner score, Visnic allowed just three hits in his 3.1 innings of work, in which he did not allow a run, helping him drop his earned run average by 11 points—down to a 1.04.

Down 7-4 in the ninth after the Blue Hens got two runs off of senior Brant Norlander and one off of freshman Eric Peterson in the eighth, the Owls looked to make a comeback.

Hall and freshman Nick Lustrino led off the inning with singles. Redshirt senior Steve Nikorak would get Hall to bump over to third, setting up runners on the corners for redshirt junior Matt Elko, who lifted the sacrifice fly to bring Temple within two. Delaware's Jeff Murray would convert his first save as he got senior
Taylor Juran to ground out to end the Owls chances.

Temple (13-23, 1-8) remains at home, as it in now only half way through its eight-game homestand. The Owls will return to action on Friday when they welcome the Richmond Spiders for their next Atlantic 10 Conference weekend series. The three-game set will get underway for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field.
