VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Temple field hockey coach Amanda Janney and incoming freshman Tricia Light participated in the U.S. Field Hockey Association's National Futures Championship over the past three days in Virginia Beach, Va., at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center. The championship serves as a selection event for USA Field Hockey and is the foundation of the organization's Olympic pipeline system.
Light was selected to participate from the Pennsylvania Regional Futures Tournament in May. Her U19 team, Helsinki, finished the championships with an overtime win in strokes to take the bronze medal. Janney coached an under 16 team, Sochi, which went 3-2-1 and won its last game with a shutout, 1-0.
"After coming from coaching college players at high performance, it was a new adventure to coach under 16 players," said Janney. "Their basic skills are still improving and their understanding of strategy is still evolving, but their enthusiasm and love of the game is just as great as our college players. It was fun to teach that level and our Sochi team meshed well and played better with each game.
"We are proud of Tricia as she did great in her first NFC tournament. It was a big accomplishment for her to make it, and she played great in the midfield for Helsinki. This experience of playing against the best players in the nation is a great prep for Tricia to get ready for the Division I level. She played six games on a wet astroTurf and I think she learned a lot. She is going to make an impact on our team this fall and we are glad that she is now better prepared after participating in this high level tournament."
