Temple set for its final A-10 season with the addition of VCU

2012 Temple Field Hockey Schedule

PHILADELPHIA - The 2012 Temple field hockey schedule has been announced by eighth-year head coach Amanda Janney, who has the Owls opening this season's slate at home with Virginia and Duke in the Temple Invitational. The Owls will play seven games as part of their final Atlantic 10 schedule before starting BIG EAST play in 2013.

Prior to the official start of the season, Temple will host its annual Cherry & White Alumni Game on Saturday, Aug. 18, featuring the alums against the current players. Alumni can RSVP to tufh@temple.edu.

On Friday, Aug. 24, the Owls play their first regular season game against Virginia at 4:00 p.m., and they complete the Temple Invitational with a game against Duke two days later at 1:00 p.m. Following the Duke game, Janney will run a two-hour clinic. Former National Team player Carrie Lingo will serve as one of the coaches for the clinic.

"With this season being our last in the A-10, we really want it to be memorable," said Janney. "We have scheduled really competitive teams at the start of the season to ensure that we are prepared for our tough A-10 schedule. Scheduling these top 20 teams gives us the experience and awareness that has helped us in past seasons."

Temple's schedule features a five-game homestand in September, including games against Penn State, Lafayette, Delaware, Drexel and Colgate.

For the second year in a row, the Owls will play defending national champ Maryland, this time on the road. That contest is set for Sunday, Sept. 30. Temple returns home the following weekend as its final A-10 season begins with a game against new addition VCU at home on Friday, Oct. 5. The Owls will then face Radford at home the following day in their Homecoming Game.

Maryland, Duke and Penn State were all ranked in top 10 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association in the final poll of 2011.

Other A-10 home games will be played against Lock Haven, Saint Louis and Saint Joseph's. The Saint Louis game on Friday, Oct. 19, will mark Temple's annual Play 4 the Cure game, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Sunday, Oct. 28 against Saint Joseph's is the final regular season game and will be Senior Day for the Owls, who will honor lone senior Katie Briglia prior to that 1:00 p.m. contest.

"We have a great incoming class of eight strong freshmen joining our TUFH family, and I believe that our team will be ready to compete with the strong teams on our schedule," said Janney. "We played a great game in last year's A-10 Championship, but didn't come out on top, and we remember that each time we train. We hope that last year's experiences combined with the new experiences our players gained from our spring season games and the USFHA HP games will help us be ready for this year's A10 schedule."

The four-team A-10 Tournament will be hosted by Massachusetts on Nov. 2-3.
