Reigning conference champ Richmond has been picked first in a vote by the league's eight head coaches
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Field Hockey Champion Richmond has been predicted to win the 2012 A-10 Championship once again, according to the preseason poll conducted by the league's eight head coaches. Temple, which narrowly lost in the title game to Richmond in 2011 by a score of 1-0, has been picked to finish third this season.
"The poll result is a little disappointing after our strong finish in last year's tournament," said eighth-year head coach Amanda Janney. "We lost a strong senior class, but we had a great spring season and our freshmen are playing well right now. We expect to be in the A-10 final again this coming November, and we can use the poll as more motivation to get us ready for A-10's."
The Spiders, who have won the A-10 championship seven out of the last 10 years, will return nine starters and 18 letterwinners from last year's team. Among those starters will include junior All-American goalkeeper Anna Zarkosk, who had 101 saves and seven shutouts last season, and sophomore All-Region Chelsea Davies.
Massachusetts (7-11; 5-1) took the second place spot in the coach's preseason poll. The Minutewomen, who lost to Temple in the Championship semifinals, will return A-10 All-Conference senior Kim Young. Young led the Minutewomen last season with four goals, five assists, and 13 goals.
The Owls, who placed third in the preseason poll, will return six starters and 11 letterwinners this season. Among those returning are sophomore Amber Youtz and senior Katie Briglia. Youtz led the team with four goals, two assists, and 10 points, while Briglia followed with two goals, five assists, and nine points.
First-year A-10 team VCU took the fourth spot in the preseason poll, followed by La Salle (fifth), Saint Joseph's (sixth), Lock Haven (seventh), and Saint Louis (eighth).
Hosted by the Minutewomen of Massachusetts, the 2012 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship will be held on November 2nd and 3rd at the Richard F. Garber Field in Amherst, Mass.
