PHILADELPHIA - For the second time in as many games this season, the Temple field hockey team narrowly lost to a top-10 team. This time it was the #5 Duke Blue Devils (1-1) who edged the Owls (0-2) by a score of 2-1 on Temple's home turf Sunday afternoon.
Temple put it all on the line, inserting a kicking back (a field player who can use her feet inside the circle and is a substitute for the goalkeeper) with more than 11 minutes remaining in the game. The strategy didn't hurt, as the Owls did not give up a goal in the remaining time, but despite three shots they could not tie the score.
Duke struck first less than seven minutes into the game when Aileen Johnson scored on a rebounded shot and save by Lizzy Millen after a penalty corner. Johnson caught Millen off-balance after the initial save, and the 1-0 lead would stand until the second half.
With six minutes elapsed in the second half, Temple's Amber Youtz scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Lauren Hunt to tie the game. Ultimately, the tie was short-lived as the Blue Devils' Jessica Buttinger scored the game-winner less than four minutes later.
Duke finished with 14 total shots to the Owls' 10, and also had the edge in penalty corners with 10, compared to five for Temple.
The Owls will play their next two games on the road, and will next be in action at Rutgers for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, Sept. 2.
