PHILADELPHIA - Teams from Central Connecticut State, Cornell and Navy will be on hand to participate in the 2012 Temple Volleyball Invitational this weekend at McGonigle Hall. Temple (7-4) will play in both matches on Friday, Sept. 14, facing the CCSU Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. followed by a match against the Navy Midshipmen at 7:30 p.m.
Live stats for all five matches this weekend will be available HERE, and Temple's three matches will be streamed live and are available to subscribers HERE.
The action continues Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10:00 a.m. as Central Connecticut (5-5) faces Cornell (1-6). At 1:00 p.m., Navy (3-7) will play Central Connecticut, and at 5:00 p.m. the Owls will take on Cornell in the final match of the weekend.
With a 7-4 overall record, Temple is enjoying its best start to a season since 2002, a year which saw the Owls go 29-7, win the A-10 and advance to the NCAA Sweet 16. There has been individual success as well, as the Owls have earned five All-Tournament awards so far. Elyse Burkert, the reigning Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week, was named to All-Tournament Teams at Miami and South Carolina. Burkert's numbers have not only been impressive within the conference, but with 4.55 kills per set she currently ranks in a tie for 10th among all players in NCAA Division I.
Chelsea Tupuola was named the MVP of the Big 5 Tournament on Sept. 1, and this past weekend was named to the All-Tournament Team yet again at Miami. With 4.86 digs per set, Tupuola ranks second in the A-10. Tiffany Connatser also earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Big 5 Tournament, and Connatser currently ranks 31st in the nation in assists per set at 11.32.
As a team, defense has been key to Temple's success. The Owls' 17.76 digs per set rank 22nd among all NCAA Division I teams, and first in the Atlantic 10.
CCSU enters the weekend with a 5-5 overall record, and recently went 2-1 at the New Hampshire Holly Young Invitational. Seniors Emily Cochran and Jamie Rademacher were named to the All-Tournament Team. The head coach of the Blue Devils, Linda Sagnelli, is in her 13th season at the helm.
Navy is 3-7 so far this season, and the Mids won their most recent match 3-1 vs. The Citadel. Erin Fortner currently leads the team with 2.83 kills per set, and the Mids have a deep roster that has seen action in all their matches. Head Coach Larry Bock is in his second season at Navy, and has the distinction of having more wins than any other volleyball coach in NCAA history. He entered the 2012 season with 1,358 overall wins, the majority of those coming in his 34 seasons as the Juniata women's volleyball coach.
Cornell has struggled to a 1-6 record this year, with its lone win coming against Bucknell. Temple and Cornell have a common opponent in NJIT, but the Owls won that match 3-0 while the Big Red lost 3-2. Breanna Wong leads Cornell with 2.59 kills per set, and Rachel D'Epaginer is averaging a team-best 1.00 blocks per set. Head coach Trudy Vande Berg is in her first season at Cornell after assistant-coaching stints at Iowa State and Duke.
Temple has not faced any of its weekend opponents since 2008 when the Owls defeated Cornell, 3-1. All-time, Cornell leads Temple 2-1, Temple leads CCSU 2-0, and the Owls lead Navy 1-0.
