Volleyball Heads to Miami (OH) Invitational For Three Matches This Weekend

Owls (4-3) coming off a team title at the Big 5 Tournament
PHILADELPHIA - Coming off a big weekend that saw the Owls take the team title at the 2012 Big 5 Tournament, Temple volleyball now heads to Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami Invitational this weekend. Temple will play Chicago State (2-7) at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, before facing Indiana State (1-6) and Miami (1-6) on Saturday. Live stats will be available for all three matches HERE.
The Owls' match against host Miami on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. will be live-streamed for subscribers HERE.
Temple is 4-3 on the young season and off to their best start since 2006. The Big 5 title was the Owls' first in the four-year history of the tournament, and senior libero Chelsea Tupuola was named the Tournament MVP. Also named to the All-Tournament team was sophomore setter Tiffany Connatser. So far this season the Owls have been led offensively by Elyse Burkert with 103 kills (4.29 kills per set), and defensively by Tupuola with 104 digs (4.33 digs per set). Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Iacobini leads the team with 14 blocks (0.88 blocks per set), and Connatser is averaging a team-best 10.19 assists per set.
The Owls lead all teams in the Atlantic 10 in digs with 16.38 digs per set, and defense has been a point of pride for Temple this season. The team racked up an impressive 106 digs against Villanova, despite narrowly losing in a tight, five-set match.
The Chicago State Cougars enter the weekend with a 2-7 overall record, and are coming off a 3-0 loss to Youngstown State. So far this season the Cougars have been led on offense end by Sydney Van Munster with 2.57 kills per set. On the defensive end, Mia Townsell leads the team with 146 digs for an average of 4.87 digs per set.
The Indiana State Sycamores are 1-6 overall and coming off a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Western Illinois. Indiana State fell behind 2-0 in the match before rallying to tie, and then tied the fifth set 15-15 before falling in five sets. The Sycamores defeated Butler, 3-1, to start the season, but have since lost six straight.
Temple has never faced either Chicago State or Indiana State in the history of the program.
Host team Miami comes into the weekend at 1-6 overall after a 3-2 loss to Xavier on Sept. 4. Meg Riley leads the Redhawks with 3.50 kills per set, and libero Madison Hardy leads the team with 4..89 digs per set. All-time, Miami leads Temple 2-0, but the teams have not faced each other since 2005.
