Owls play Lafayette at home on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Temple's defense was strong, but the offensive aggressiveness of #8 Penn State was too much for the Owls' field hockey team in a 5-1 loss on Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. Temple (2-3) went into halftime down 2-1, but the Nittany Lions (4-2) scored three times on 15 second-half shots.

Penalty corners were the difference, especially early in the game as the Nittany Lions scored twice on corners in the first seven minutes. Kelsey Amy put both goals in the back of the net on assists from Whitney Reddig as Penn State took a 2-0 lead.

The shots kept adding up for PSU, but Temple's Lizzy Millen was solid in the cage and kept the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the first half.

When Temple was awarded its first corner in the 28th minute, the Owls made it count. Katie Briglia scored her first goal of the season with assists from Nicole Kroener and Mandi Shearer, putting TU within a goal going into halftime.

Millen made an impressive string of saves early in the second half as Penn State came out firing, and it was nearly 20 minutes into the half before the Nittany Lions scored again. Brittany Grzywacz took an assist from Amy for another goal on a corner in the 54th minute, and less than two minutes later, PSU's Laura Gebhart gave her team a 4-1 lead.

Millen totaled 12 saves before leaving the game with 13 minutes remaining. Penn State's Ashtin Klinger slipped a rebounded shot and save past the Owls' Haley Mitchell in the 63rd minute for the final score of the game. Mitchell finished with two saves in the contest.

The Owls will be back in action at home on Sunday, facing Lafayette at 1:00 p.m.
