#16 Field Hockey Earns Fourth Shutout of the Season, 4-0 vs. Appalachian State

10.18.13 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - It was the fourth shutout win of the year for 16th-ranked Temple field hockey as the Owls (11-4) earned a 4-0 win against visiting Appalachian State (2-12) on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Erin VanHorn scored her first two goals of the season in the victory.

"It was a great way to respond after a tough game last weekend," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "Even though it's non-conference, every game is important to us and we wanted to make sure we came out strong. We tried a different rotation in this game and it worked out really well."

Temple recorded 36 total shots compared to six for the Mountaineers. Lizzy Millen made two saves to preserve the shutout for the Owls.

There were two more reasons for Temple to celebrate, as the game was dedicated to both Play 4 The Cure and Alumni Day.

Speaking on the team's involvement with Play 4 The Cure, Janney said it's a good time for the team to reflect. "This gives us a chance to take a different perspective on things that are important to us," she said. "Cancer affects everybody and this cause means a lot to us. It's good for us to take a step back and play for something bigger than ourselves."

Alyssa Delp scored the Owls' first goal on a direct corner in the eighth minute, with assists from Rachel Steinman and Nicole Kroener.

Just a minute and a half later, Temple took a 2-0 lead when Lauren Hunt collected a rebound off a shot and save, and put it past the left side of Appalachian State goalkeeper Sarah Anderson.

VanHorn made it 3-0 thanks to a pass from Amanda Fuertsch in the 21st minute. Fuertsch's quick pass from the right side of the cage found Van Horn who was able to beat out Anderson.

Anderson kept the Owls from driving up the score much further, finishing the game with 15 saves.

The final goal of the game came with just over 12 minutes remaining, when a scramble in front of the net saw the ball tip off the stick of Katie Foran and find VanHorn, who scored her second goal of the day.

The Owls will play another non-conference contest this weekend as they travel to #20 Drexel for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday, Oct. 20.
