PHILADELPHIA - The home careers of three seniors ended in style as #17 Temple field hockey defeated Georgetown 5-1 on Friday afternoon in the final home game of the season. The Owls improve to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST. With one conference game remaining, Temple has now clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament, set for Nov. 8 and 10 at UConn.
The seedings for the four-team tournament will be determined following the final regular season games on Nov. 2. Temple is currently alone in fourth place. The Owls' four wins can only be matched by one team sitting behind them, Providence, a team Temple defeated two weeks ago.
Molly Doyle, Lauren Hunt and Mandi Shearer were honored prior to the game, and escorted by their families onto the field during a special ceremony.
"We have such great support from our families, and they come to every game," said Doyle. "It's really nice to have them come and experience this with us. They've been a part of the program as long as we have, and they've put so much into it just like we have. It's nice to walk out together and get recognized."
"We're so proud of them," said head coach Amanda Janney. "They've developed into amazing people and amazing players. "I'm exhilarated for them that they're having such great seasons, but it is sad seeing them play their last home game."
Just over six minutes into the game, Hunt started off her Senior Day the right way with her fifth goal of the season. On a corner play, Hunt tipped in a shot by Alyssa Delp, who was credited with an assist.
Georgetown goalkeeper Rosalie Nolen turned away a number of strong shots by Temple for much of the half, and two of her Hoya teammates were credited with defensive saves.
In the 22nd minute, Temple put another goal on the board when the Central Dauphin High School duo teamed up to slip the ball past Nolan. Katie Foran passed to Amber Youtz at the bottom of the circle, and Youtz tipped it in for what would be her first of two goals in the game.
The first goal of the second half was the lone score for the Hoyas, by Taylor Craig off a rebounded shot and save by Lizzy Millen.
Temple answered just two minutes later, taking a 3-1 lead on Youtz's second goal of the game. She scored off a rebound for her 15th goal of the season.
With 11 minutes left in the game, sophomore Kayla Laughman scored her first career goal for the Owls, taking a pass from the right side from Hunt, who recorded her third point of the day.
The final goal of the game was scored just 20 seconds later, and was scored by Temple's Central Dauphin High School duo of Youtz and Katie Foran. Rachel Steinman set up the ball for Youtz, who passed to Foran. The goal was the fifth of the season for Foran, while the assist from Youtz marked the 100th point of her career at Temple.
For the game, Temple had 27 total shots to Georgetown's five, which included a 20-3 edge in shots on goal. The Hoyas dropped to 2-14 for the season and 0-6 in the BIG EAST.
"Having the intensity to turn it on and score back-to-back goals so quickly was huge for us," said Janney. "We had a lot of goals from different players and a lot of people stepping up at this late point in the season which is great to see. The goal for Kayla was huge too, we've been hard on her in practice and she stepped up- it was great to see her get rewarded today."
The Owls will play a non-conference game to close out the weekend, traveling to Lafayette for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, Oct. 27.
