#18 Field Hockey Drops an Overtime Heartbreaker at #17 Louisville, 2-1

10.4.13 | Field Hockey

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a half hour weather delay with the score knotted at 1-1, #17 Louisville (9-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) struck the final blow just over three minutes into overtime to defeat #18 Temple field hockey, 2-1. The Owls (8-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) had a five-game win streak snapped with the loss.

With five minutes left in regulation, the teams cleared the field for 33 minutes due to lightning and heavy rain. The Owls had led 1-0 from just before halftime until the 51st minute when the Cardinals scored the equalizer.

Most of the first half was a defensive display by both teams, as shot after shot was turned away at both ends of the field. Louisville had six corners that resulted in no goals, and the Owls had three before finally getting one to go.

With three minutes left before halftime, Temple's fourth corner of the game resulted in the first goal for either team. Molly Doyle took a direct feed from Nicole Kroener on the baseline and Mandi Shearer on the stick stop, and put her fifth goal of the season into the back of the cage.

The teams were tied with eight shots apiece after 35 minutes, with Temple holding a 1-0 lead. Both goalkeepers had racked up three saves by the break.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Memphis scored what would be the only other goal of regulation. Elisa Garcia got a pass from Paige Monsen on a corner play to tie the game in the 51st minute.

In the remaining time of regulation, Lizzy Millen made a big save for the Owls, while Shearer came up with a defensive save.

Millen was tested again early in overtime and came up with another big save, only to have the rebounded shot be collected by Louisville's Jennifer Pels, who got it past her for the game-winner.

Temple will return home on Sunday to face Bucknell in a non-conference match-up at 1:00 p.m.
