PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball claimed its fourth win of the season with an 81-57 decision over Oakland on Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall.

The Owls improved to 4-1 overall, while Oakland fell to 1-6.

"We started both halves with steals and easy lay-ups," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "On defense we need to make sure we communicate better."

In the first half, Temple scored first on a three-pointer by junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) and never relinquished the lead. The Golden Grizzlies tied the game twice in the opening minutes. The Owls built their lead to as many as 14 points three times before taking a 10-point advantage, 39-29, into the locker room.

In the second half, TU boosted its edge to double digits, leading by as many as 29 points.

Thames and Shipp each posted career highs to pace the Owls. Thames finished with 21points and nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double.  Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) followed with 19 points and six assists.  Shipp added a career-best 18 points. Sophomore Erica Covile (Canton, Mich.) had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Williams finished with eight points and a game-high 11 assists.

Olivia Nash led Oakland with 16 points, while Michele Hayes came off the bench for 10 points.

Overall, Temple out-rebounded Oakland, 41-33. The Owls shot 51 percent from the floor (34-67) compared to the Grizzlies' 35 percent (21-60).

"They shoot the three a lot," Cardoza said. "Holding them to four makes was key."

Temple concludes its four-game homestand with Philadelphia Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at McGonigle Hall. The men's teams from both schools follow in an 8 p.m. contest in the Liacouras Center. For season ticket information, call 215-204-8499.

"We're trying to fight for bragging rights in the city," Cardoza added. "This game is always a dog-fight."
