Temple Field Hockey Finishes at #17 in the Final NCAA RPI Rankings

12.3.13 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA - The final NCAA RPI rankings for the 2013 season have Temple field hockey at #17 after a very strong season for the Owls, who finished at 14-6 overall. The highlights for the team are numerous, and most recently include junior forward Amber Youtz earning Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Second Team All-America honors.

2013 Temple Field Hockey Highlights

• Temple finished at 14-6 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference.

• The Owls earned the fourth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, advancing to a conference tournament for the 11th year in a row. Their season ended in the BIG EAST Semifinals with a 3-0 loss to UConn, and the Huskies went on to win both the BIG EAST Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

• Temple was nationally-ranked for the last nine weeks of the season, entering the NFHCA Coaches Poll at #11 on Sept. 10, and earning a #19 ranking prior to its final game of the year.

• The national ranking for Temple on Sept. 10 was its first in 12 years.

• The Owls finished at #17 in the NCAA RPI rankings, and were one of four BIG EAST teams to rank in the RPI Top 20.

• Ninth-year head coach Amanda Janney earned her 100th career victory on Oct. 27 in the Owls' 3-2 win at Lafayette, and her career record now stands at 100-86.

• Junior forward Amber Youtz was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America Second Team.

• Youtz and senior defender Molly Doyle were named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region First and Second Teams, respectively.

• The then-unranked Owls upset #6 Penn State in a 3-0 shutout, beating the Nittany Lions for the first time since 1983 and for only the second time in 33 meetings between the two teams.

• Youtz led all players in NCAA Division I for much of the season in goals per game and points per game.

• Youtz was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

• Doyle was named to the BIG EAST Second Team and the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

• Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen posted five shutouts and was named to the BIG EAST Second Team.

• The Owls earned a total of four BIG EAST Weekly Awards for Offensive Player of the Week (Amber Youtz (2), Molly Doyle, Katie Foran).

• Amber Youtz scored four goals and recorded two assists in a 6-0 shutout vs. Monmouth, tallying 10 total points which tied for the most in a single game by any player in NCAA Division I for the 2013 season.

• All but one of Temple's losses were to nationally ranked teams, and the sixth loss was to Delaware, a team that became ranked the week following and went on to win the CAA.

• Five of the Owls' six losses were to teams who made the 16-team NCAA tournament...Four losses were to teams who won their conference (Maryland - ACC, UConn - BIG EAST, Delaware - CAA).

• Temple defeated another nationally ranked team (other than Penn State) when the Owls earned a 1-0 win vs. #20 Drexel on Oct. 20.

• Molly Doyle was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior Game on Nov. 23, making it the seventh year in a row that a Temple player has been among the 38 chosen for the game.

The Owls' season was the best in head coach Amanda Janney's nine years with a program that has seen consistent improvement. Only one of her teams won more games (15 in 2007), and the number of weeks that Temple appeared in the national ranking is something the Owls had not experienced since the early 1990's. The team loses three valuable seniors in Doyle, Lauren Hunt and Mandi Shearer, but returns eight starters in 2014 including four of the top six goal-scorers.
