HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Temple men's track and field team opened the indoor season on Saturday with a solid showing at the annual Jack Pyrah Invitational, hosted by Villanova at the Haverford College Indoor Facility. The meet served as a warm-up of sorts for the team, which will not compete again until Jan. 10-11 at the Rutgers Invitational.
Junior Justin Berg earned the highest finish for the men's team at the meet, taking third in the weight throw with a mark of 16.11m.
Freshman Jefferey Craskey took fourth place in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.28. Sophomore Jamal Williams and freshman Adam Hasan took ninth and 11th place, respectively, in the 300m with times of 37.18 and 37.45. Hasan and Williams also placed 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 60m.
Williams continued his strong day with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, earning a mark of 21' 3.50" (6.49m).
Those strong performances and many others came just a day after the track and field program learned that it's men's indoor and outdoor teams are two of seven that will be cut as varsity sports after this school year. Head track and field coach Eric Mobley said he was extremely proud of how the entire team responded.
"It was really great to see the support everyone had for each other today, and the way everyone competed," said Mobley. "They really came together as a team, and we had some alumni show up as well. We didn't know how the athletes would respond, and you hope for the best. They came out and performed well and really went after it. I was very proud of both teams today.
"Jeff was really solid for his first meet," said Mobley, "and he won his section of the 800. We also had solid performances in the 300 and Jamal was good in the jumps and the 300. It was a good chance to see where we're at right now and a good start to the season."
