PHILADELPHIA – The most played Philadelphia college basketball rivalry takes center stage Saturday night when the Temple men's basketball team visits Hagan Arena to take on Saint Joseph's. Tip time is 6:00 p.m. with the game being televised live by CBS Sports Network (1210 AM WPHT).
Temple (14-6, 3-3 A10) owns an 88-66 lead in the series, but had its 10-game win streak over Saint Joseph's (12-7, 3-3 A10) snapped last season in an 82-72 loss at Hagan Arena. That marked the Owls first visit to the Hawks campus since 2001.
Besides being a key game in the ever-tight Atlantic 10 Conference standings, it is also a critical one for Big 5 bragging rights. Temple is unbeaten (2-0) in city-series play while SJU is 1-1. Both teams have a meeting with La Salle (2-0 Big 5) remaining.
Senior Khalif Wyatt leads not only head coach Fran Dunphy's Temple squad, but also the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring with a 17.8 scoring average. The 6-4 guard, who has been red-hot of late (23.3 ppg. over the last six outings), also tops the Cherry and White with a 4.1 assist average.
Senior swingman Scootie Randall (11.6 ppg., 6.7 rpg.), who scored 21 points in the Owls' win over Richmond Wednesday, and sophomore forward Anthony Lee (11.8 ppg., 7.7 rpg.) also average double figures. Senior forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (8.6 ppg.) and sophomore guard Will Cummings (5.4 ppg.) round out the Owls starting five.
Saint Joseph's, under the direction of head coach Phil Martelli, is looking to match its season best win streak (three games) with a victory over the Owls. The Hawks, preseason favorites to win the conference, are coming off consecutive wins over Xavier (59-49) and Fordham (66-62) to even their A10 mark. SJU is tied with Temple for ninth-place in the league, but the schools only have one more loss than the conference leaders.
The Hawks sport a balanced attack featuring four double figure scorers led by senior guard Carl Jones (15.1 ppg.). Junior forward Ronald Roberts (11.0 ppg., 8.7 rpg.) tops the A10 in rebounding while junior forward C.J. Aiken (11.3 ppg.) is the league leader in blocks (3.1 bpg.). Junior guard Langston Galloway (14.2 ppg.) is the team's top three-point threat while sophomore guard Chris Wilson (8.0 ppg.) rounds out the starting five.
