PHILADELPHIA – Senior guard Khalif Wyatt scored a career-high 35 points and nearly was the hero for Temple for the second straight game, but Duquesne had the last say. With the Owls leading by one with seven seconds to play, Duquesne's Derrick Colter was fouled on a drive to the basket and converted both free throws to lift the upstart Dukes to an 84-83 win Thursday at the Liacouras Center.
With the loss, Temple drops to 16-8 on the year and to an even 5-5 in Atlantic 10 play. The one-point loss marks a record fourth straight game that has been decided by a single digit for the Owls. Duquesne wins its first game in 2013 and its first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the season to improve to 8-16 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Duquesne started strong, hitting three treys in the opening three minutes to take an 11-4 lead, and never stopped. Looking like one of the top teams in the tough Atlantic 10 Conference instead of the only winless squad among the 16 league teams, the Dukes connected on 63 percent of their first half shots, including seven-of-14 from three-point range, to take a 43-37 lead at intermission.
Freshman forward Quevyn Winters (22 points) did the most damage over the opening 20 minutes, hitting all six of his field goal attempts, including four from behind the arc, for 16 points. Wyatt, as usual, kept the Owls in the game, with 17 points in the opening half.
Temple stormed out of the locker room, scoring 17 of the first 20 second half points to take its largest lead, 54-46, and looked to be ready to take control of the contest. Randall had six of his 15 points in the run while Wyatt capped it with a jumper just over five minutes into the period.
The young Dukes, who started three freshmen, did not know it was time to fold. Instead, they answered with nine straight points, the final three coming on another Winters' trifecta, to retake the lead 55-54.
The game went back and forth until a 6-0 DU run gave the Dukes a 66-60 lead with just over six minutes to play.
Duquesne would extend that to nine points, 74-65, three minutes later.
The Owls cut it to four, 75-71, with two Wyatt free throws completing a 6-1 run.
Again Duquesne responded with Colter (17 points) and Marvin Binney each sinking two free throws.
Temple then ran off seven of the next eight points with Dalton Pepper, who had a season-high 13 points, contributing the last five to cut the deficit to 80-78.
Colter, who made nine of 10 from the line, hit two free throws to make it a two-possession game (82-78) with 21 seconds left.
Wyatt, who was perfect on 15 attempts from the charity stripe, added two of his own with 16 seconds to play and then fouled Jeremiah Jones. Jones missed both free throws, giving the Owls the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.
Like the Dayton game, Wyatt had the ball in his hands and drove the lane, making a lay-up while being fouled by Andre Marhold (15 pts, 15 rebs). The senior guard calmly hit the free throw to lift the Owls to an 83-82 lead with seven seconds left.
Colter then drove the left side of the lane and put up an off-balanced jumper with 2.9 seconds left. Pepper was whistled for the foul and the Duke freshman made both for the lead.
DiLeo found Pepper on a long in-bounds pass, but the junior's jumper rimmed out to end the game.
Besides his scoring, Wyatt had a career-high six steals in the game as well as team high in rebounds (6) and assists (6).
Temple will have little time for turnaround, as it will travel to Amherst, Mass. Friday for Saturday's 6:00 p.m. tipoff against the UMass Minutemen (CBS Sports Network/1210 AM WPHT).
